100% agree. IMHO, There should actually be brackets at 250K (39%), 1M (42%), 5M (46%) and 10M (50%).

There is only so much that one individual can consume.

I'm not seeing the point of your argument. Typically, your return on taxes paid becomes less beneficial as your make more. Maybe you are just for wealth redistribution then I do understand.

I am not so much for redistribution as I am for people paying for their own country's success. Part of this comes down to being a bit more egalitarian and realizing how good you have it and how others do not. Buffet's perspective is that we fortunate ones (all Americans) won the "Ovarian Lottery" and are lucky enough to be born in the country that other tax dollars, lives, and sweat, have created. Thus, we all should try to help those who aren't as fortunate.

Does that mean I am not greedy? I am in investment banking, I have worked for 9 years, 4 in under, 2 in grad, and 3 studying the CFA, to get to where I am. However, I also realize that some people do need help and should get it.

I also realize that the government should help out sectors that are in trouble, for the benefit of everybody.

One key thing that people do not realize is that helping out the less fortunate enures to the benefit of the more fortunate. How? It prevents a complete corruption and evenual destruction of society, in which case the lower classes raise up and take the higher classes wealth.

Frankly, I'm more than willing to keep people less fortunate happy so I can go on living the way I want.

Another key thing to remember is that when you get into the higher stratospheres of income, your "utilization" of national defense (HUGE part of the budget) is MUCH, MUCH higher than the average person's.

An Average Working Stiff needs protection for himself, his wife, his 2.2 children, his finances, his cars, his house, and the belongings therein. A given Average Working Stiff is also extremely unlikely to be specifically targeted by "the enemy" or "the terrorists" for any given reason, and rightfully so, because he is so unbelievably average. He really doesn't need much military protection in his own right, because there's not much to protect.

A person making $10M per year likely has multiple houses, multiple cars/trucks/buses/boats/planes/trains/helicopters, multiple places of business, multiple employees, multiple large bank accounts, multiple large investment accounts, etc., all of which need protecting in order to continue that guy's existence as he knows it. Due to his large amount of assets, he is also more likely to be targeted, and therefore more likely to need military protection.

This is in response to Cad's business owner letter. Not every rich person wants less taxes. In fact, some, like the netflix CEO and Warren Buffet want to be taxed MORE. Yes, some people are only motivated by money, but for some, they're motivated by the challenge of a job, or bettering society with a superior product or service. In fact, there is a group of rich folks who are fighting AGAINST the repeal of the estate tax (led by Bill Gate's father), because they don't want to see America turn into a bigger Plutocracy than it already is.

Just to dispel the myth that rich folks are ONLY in it for the money (well, maybe republicans are 😛) and that raising marginal tax rates will discourage work.

What is stopping him from giving more to the IRS??!?!?!?!?!?! Why do these people always want their neighbors to pay more as well?

Yea.. after all, these bailouts aren't going to pay for themselves... thank god, I don't use netflix and instead use blockbuster..

edit: Netflix is now on my personal list of things I'm going to boycot.. just like movies by certain liberal actors (e.g., Sean Penn, Jane Fonda, george clooney, etc)..

A loser sinking with a loser company. How appropriate.

I always laugh at people who bitch about the "rich" paying more taxes. Like they have a big vested interest in the situation. Half the time these idiot "conservatives" don't make anywhere near the higher tax brackets. How many people here can claim to make more than $150K, let alone the $250K that might be affected by Obama's plans.

This is a good point. I believe the term is "useful idiots." It is people idolizing and supporting the interests of their social superiors, even when those interests are against their own personal interests. It may come from some pack mentality; latching on to the strong to feel better and maybe reap benefits by riding their coattails.

It may be puzzling or funny when this happens in economic matters. But it is very bad when it happens with political or legal matters. The "kindred spirit millionaires" become goose steppers doing their masters' bidding.

Mail a check to the treasury. They take donations.

Put up or shut up.

Oh, income is already going to be taxed at 50% or damn close to it as he desires.

It's one thing to be willing to pay your fair share of a higher tax that will help society, and quite another to send only your part of it that will do effectively nothing.

But you haters of democracy don't have a clue about how people can cooperate to get things done with an elected government.

If you had your ideology's way, we could get rid of public schools, libraries, government-provided medical care, subsidies for public transit, public parks, etc.

Anyone have his email? I want to ask him how much he is going to voluntarily contribute before taxes ARE raised on him. Might as well get started now.

Because they think that the group of people in their income bracket are not paying enough compared to those making less, and want to help those making less.

Raising the tax rate has an effect. One person sending more doesn't.

The fact he'd pay more simply shows his dedication to his position, and his motive.

Sinking with a loser company? If you call that a loser in this economic climate, what do you call a winner?

He was referring to Blockbuster.

It's quite obvious you didn't read the "letter" if you think this is a "response" to that. It's not.

Also as others have noted - he is free to send in more money if he wishes. But just because he claims he wants to(but for some reason doesn't...go figure) it means everyone should be forced to? Only in the mind of a liberal....

He wants to pay only what he legally owes, but wouldn't mind if what he legally owes is increased somewhat. Only the mind of a conservative wouldn't get this.

But again, you liberals skip over the part about FORCING OTHERS TO as well. Just because some rich liberal thinks he could/should/etc more taxes doesn't mean that it should be forced on the rest.

Who's "like 18 years old?" Reed Hastings? He's 48.

So sad.. LengendKiller never replied to me about sending extra money to the US government or to help "bail" me out. The hypocrisy. I guess, what do you expect from a liberal?

With one hand he stuffs his face with food, with the other he want to take food away from others. Maybe one of these days, he'll be a man and say what he means and does want he says. Instead, he acts like an eight year old riling his parents to save the "bum" on the street and in order to shut him up, his parents (who are realistic) tell him they could do that, but they will have to take away his lollipop. If people are going to critically think about things, they should.. if not, STFU... people like LengendKiller are ruining this country.

Listen fuckstick. I'll help out people when they need it but otherwise, I'm against helping them.

How much did you pay in taxes last year? How would you be affected by Obama's change? Me, I would be marginally affected. I'm not pissed about it, because I realize it is for my own good.

I'd send you a check if I knew you'd pay it back.

Sorry, but I've gone to school, I've risen through the ranks, if anything, people like me are the backbone of this country. Same thing with people like Warren Buffet and Bill Gates. We are the entrepeneurs, the pushers, the rising stars.

You're nothing more than a tool wannabe who will parrot some bullshit that your conservative masters want you to believe.

Please, go take your Libertopian bullshit excuse for a lame political position and shove it up your ass. Whether it's here or that other forum, you can't hope to hold a candle in any serious debate, which is why you shove it off onto simple one-liners.

Entrepeneurs take risks. What have you risked? You play with other people's money. Associating yourself with Buffet and Gates is a pathetic joke.

Calm down Beavis.. If I wanted a rational, well thought out argument, I wouldn't be posting here (after all, where can you get "weird" people that still rant on Bush with a power of 1000 exploding suns even though Bush is no longer in office. Actually, he's probably just clearing some branches on his ranch - i.e., spare me the BDS).

In any case, your point of not contributing to the US government is well taken. There is really nothing more you have to prove. Now take a breather. Don't want you to hurt yourself.

Some people actually contribute to things they believe in -- I believe in the NRA and I have given money to them on numerous occasions. I have also monetarily contributed to civilians who have been hurt in Iraq because they were caught in the crossfire. Now, it may not be a lot compare to what "rich" people have. But its something.

What just amazes me is that people who feel so passionately about something -- e.g., helping the government by giving them more money, but yet hypocritically chose not to when called out to do it personally.

In any case, whatever playa... "Backbone of this country".. "Gone to school".. "risen through the ranks.." You go girl!!! hahahaha... Keep on talking.. because, that's all liberals do now a days.. except of course kill business and ruin the country..

That is what I don't understand. There are tons of charities that could use his money. Why urge the government to increase taxes so hsi money can goto a bloated organization that will eventually disperse 10%. Many charities are at 80-90% efficient.

Yeah, and you keep defending this government-managed economy and the printing machines. The Fed will fix everything, the (first) bailout will be a boon to the world, gold won't go up, socialism is ok, and you, Bill Gates, and Warren Buffet made America great.

More and more people here are seeing you for what you are. An intelligent person who is full of bad ideas and bullshit.
