Centrino VS P4

My sister has a centrino laptop which performs pretty well and I was wondering is the P4 faster than the Centrino? The Centrino is technically slower GHZ wise but I heard what makes it fast is that it savours every clock cycle. I mean I see P4 laptops and Centrino so what I'm wondering is, why do they have P4 laptops!? Can you game on a centrino laptop relatively well? Or do you have to get the Alienware laptops with the P4 and Radeon 9700 Pro. ?!?!?!?!?!?

clock for clock, the centrino is faster, and also has the additional power saving features. Supposedly, the centrino is like an extremely well optimized p3.

I have a Dell with "Centrino", I guess I could game on it, but not those games requiring a high end 3d card.

FYI I think the processor is called Pentium-M. Centrino is that combined with a chipset and wireless LAN.

yea I know... when I first posted it, I wasnt sure if I should say P-M or Centrino but since more ppl know of Centrino I thought I should say that instead.

For integer-based stuff (pretty much all office apps), Centrino is about the same as a P4 at 1.5x the clockrate - so a 1.6GHz Centrino is like a 2.4GHz P4.

For floating point stuff it is slower because of the lower clock rate (and roughly the same # of cycles per FPU op).

the centrino is actually faster than the P4 for some non-P4 optimized tasks such as audio editing. it's a great processor, and i kinda wish they'd put more into developing that as a desktop alternative to the P4.

my lappy is P4-based though. 3.2 GHz with DC-DDR400. :) the only that sucks harder than this thing sucks batteries is britney spears before she got her record contract. ;) fast as hell though.

dudes...i have a pentium-m 1.3ghz on my dell d500, with integrated intel gfx, and even THAt can play nfsu decently. so a pentium-m with a non-integrated gfx chipset should be fine for light gaming.

I have a 1.6 centrino and it performs at par with my desktop 2.4 P4.

I would go centrio solely for the battery benefits.

I wouldn't mind having a Dothan-based slimline desktop computer for "always-on" type stuff. It would make a good 'downstairs' computer in the breakfast area or kitchen...something that's always on when you need it and you never have to boot/reboot.

Ever see those small TVs that you can mount under a cabinet in the kitchen? Maybe someone can make a SFF enclosure for Dothan that can mount under a kitchen cabinet with a clamshell LCD screen that opens downwards. Give it built-in bluetooth and infrared for a wireless keyboard/mouse and remote, throw in a TV tuner, and you've got a kitchen TV that you can surf the web with. Hmm, not a bad idea if I say so meself.

I have a good reason.

Forget about Intel. Its POWERPC ALL THE WAY. Don't get a Centrino or a P4, get an iBook, they're so much better. They come from Apple Corporation which creates the best products like iPods. I'm sure you will agree.

HP also makes pretty good laptops as well, they are the 2nd best at creating best products. I'm sure you'll agree with me there as well.
