Centrino Processors

I was wondering how the Pentium Centrino Processors compare to the Pentium 4 range and up? I am getting a 1.4 Centrino, 512 DDR, RM 9600 64mb, and was just wondering what I can expect gaming wise. Would it be able to handle HL2 at low setting and at 1024x768?

Pentium-M CPUs compare favorably against P4s. Your P-M 1.4 should run games as fast as a P4 2gHz at least, assuming all other things are equal (vid card, RAM, etc.)

Centrino is a little sticker they put on your laptop if you have a Pentium M CPU and an Intel Wireless card in the same system. Centrino = wireless.

Pentium M is the processor... 'Centrino' is the package that includes the processor and intel wireless networking

So does anyone game on theres? I'm just wondering if it can run CS:S decently. I think it will with the 9600, but am unsure of the P-M processors and thier gaming capability.

It should run it just fine at low resolution with a Radeon 9600, but I highly recommend you use the Omega Radeon drivers or use Mobility Modder on ATI's drivers. The performance increase is pretty surprising. You will probably have to play CS:S on 800x600, MAYBE 1024x768. I will be posting benchmarks on my Thinkpad with the Omega drivers, Mobility Modded ATI Drivers, and the stock IBM drivers on HL2, D3, & 3DMark. Look for those to appear within the next week.

At the introduction of Centrino Intel has said 1.7GHz Pentium M(part of Centrino), is slightly faster than Pentium 4-M at 2.6Ghz.

I say at 1.4GHz its using the Banias core not Dothan, so it would be approximately equal to 2.1-2.2GHz overall, and around 1.9-2.0GHz in games.

Notebooks used for real work in a mobile environment are much better off with Pentium-M/Centrino than with normal P4s. That difference is in battery life and heat. If you are a road warrior - go mobile. If you are using a notebook as a portable desktop device - it doesn't make much difference.
