Roommate has a linksys router linked to our campus connection and my Compaq X1000 laptop centrino with the intel 2100 wireless isn't detecting the network. I know this intel wireless is a little buggy but can anyone tell me how to set it up so that it detects it? One of the other suitemates has an addon linksys card for his laptop and its picking up the network fine.

He hasn't disabled SSID broadcast on his router, has he? Or enabled WEP? Or set up MAC address filtering? (If he has, congratulate him for making his network slightly more secure than the average person)

Try entering the network details manually and see if it then will connect.

Edit: And this really should have been in the Networking part of the forum.

Well it is hardware related. ;) He doesn't knwo the name of his network and stuf. Where can I find this information? I mean the other wifi card is just picking it straight up and connecting. No security at all . He is using 802.11b. Thanks again.

You may try some of the wardriving tools out there, like airsnort or netstumbler. Also, when his computer is connected, it should tell you what network it is connected to. Network Properties will tell you.

Are we sure his setup isn't 802.11a? That would obviously be the first stumbling block.

Software that detects wireless network access points and tells the user if they're encrypted or not.
