Cant get it to work in dvds and mp3s

the only time it worked was when I was doing the software test where it says right front,center,etc and when I check off the box for digital all I get is static.

I'm using the monsoon 505 but other people have been having this problem with the creative labs inspire series of speakers.

any suggestions
the wiring is set up correctly and I set windows controll pannel thing to 5.1 as well as the sound blaster mixer thing
