In this clip of The Simpsons: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqfxmWbelcQ the phrase at the end is censored anytime I see this episode on broadcast TV.

This is the line, the censored part is bold: "Celebrate the independence of your nation by blowing up a small part of it."

It's not bleeped out, it's just like it's muted.

Is that really necessary?

I've never heard of censoring by lowering the volume. How many times have you heard it like that? It was probably a one time glitch.

They also cut out every scene involving the world trade center in the New York episode.

That clip should also include Marge's reaction when she opens that bag that Homer bought.

Heh, when I was still watching the Simpsons they did not censor that quote. It was one of my favorites - something I live by every July 4th.

You crazy yanks. I have seen both of the episodes in the last year, and homer was not censored buying his fireworks and did indeed have to go up and down both WTC buildings.

LOL at your censorship.

Yet if a Simpsons like show was produced by Liberals you guys would be screaming for censorship.

Such Partisan hacks

The show is produced by liberals. This is very obvious when you think about how often it shows republicans as being evil, Fox News as being retarded, and Lisa being a genius who supports very left wing ideas while her retarded father usually supports right wing ideas.
Sideshow Bob is a psychopath who ran for office with the support of the republicans.

is it censorship if it's done voluntarily without any pressure whatsoever from the government or other outside groups?

The show also incessantly mocks liberals (and in fact, that's the very purpose of Lisa being so extreme), but you'd have had to actually watch it for you to know that.

I remember that full quote from broadcast TV, but I think I was watching the original broadcast that was Pre-911.

Somehow its difficult for me to get excited about the censorship of totally fictional characters. It did not work with Murphy Brown either, but it can produce national hissy fits.

But no denying its Rupert Muddock has a hit on his hands with the Simsons, and he sells boatloads of commercials as a result, creative types that tend to produce shows like the Simsons tend to be liberal, so Rupert contents himself with only mild censorship, to avoid killing the goose that laid the golden egg.

In the early years, the show was quite open in its right wing viewpoints, with such classic lines as:

Lisa: "Grandpa, didnt you wonder why you were getting money for nothing?"
Abe: "No, I just figured the Democrats were in power."

And
Homer: "Lousy Democrats"

The show has gravitated toward a left leaning viewpoint as the run continued.

I'm a libertarian.. not a liberal or a conservative. I'm also correctly referred to as a "classic liberal".

Dave, your stupidity STILL astounds me.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politics_in_The_Simpsons

"Some commentators say the show is political in nature and susceptible to a left-wing bias.[2] Al Jean admitted in an interview that "We [the show] are of liberal bent."[3] The writers often evince an appreciation for progressive ideals, but the show makes jokes across the political spectrum.[4] In the DVD commentaries, creator Matt Groening and the majority of people who work on the show state several times that they are very liberal, but some, such as John Swartzwelder (the writer of many episodes), are conservative. So the two main political parties of Springfield, the Republicans and the Democrats, reside in a stereotype Draculan castle, and in a public salad bar respectively. The show portrays government and large corporations as callous entities that take advantage of the common worker. [3] Thus, the writers often portray authority figures in an unflattering or negative light. In The Simpsons, politicians are corrupt, ministers such as Reverend Lovejoy are indifferent to churchgoers, and the local police force is both incompetent and corrupt"
