does anyone know if that Lite-On drive is the same as the Buslink that bestbuy had a few months ago? I got a 32x and 40x buslink there, and in device manager it comes up as Lite-on brand also

Maybe I'm missing something here.. could someone please help me out?
I flashed the Cendyne 32123S that had the XSOX firmware to the XSU1 firmware.
However, I haven't noticed any phenominal change in performance that the others are reporting. In fact the burning process seems to take longer by a few seconds. A full 700MB disc was copied in about 3 min 23 sec (used Philips 40X cd-r - courtesy BB).

I'm running the drive as a secondary master (X = 3). The flash process took about less than 2 minutes and seemed to do ok. BIOS reports 40125S. Nero (5.5.9.0) recognized the drive upon reboot (no re-installation needed), and there is no change in the sound of the drive.

I have nothing critical go wrong, I can still use my drive and burn successfully (haven't tried any fancy packet writing or Mt.Rainier format or anything).
Guess my question is, what major change was I supposed to see (if at all) after this firmware upgrade? Fine, the benchmarking graph shows 40x and all, but does it really really reduce burning times?

Cendyne 32x drives @ Circuit City $89.99 - $30 MIR - $40 MIR = $19.99.

Cendyne drives are Lite-On if it says LTR30125 for the Drive Model on the back side of the box. If the Drive Model starts with LTR or VBT (Verbatim), they are made by Lite-On. They have it at CircuitCity.com, but you can't check what's in the box. They do box other brands.

According to www.cdfreaks.com (Lite-On forum), these drives are the same as the 48x model. Read the threads before you upgrade.

According to Nero, the firmware on my Cendyne (Lite-On LTR-32132S) is XS0K. The drive has a manufacture date of Feb 2002. Does anyone know if this can be flashed to 40X?

Just a warning, you might want to unplug all other flashable drives. I messed up my dvd drive by having it on the same channel as the liteon I was flashing. There's a known bug in MTKFLASH if you have two devices on the same channel that can be flashed with this program. The outcome may be a bad flash on both drives.

Wish I would have known this sooner... but the flash failing (and hence making the drive inoperable) prompted me to upgrade to the Yamaha CRW-F1 ;)

Awesome deal HyperYagami - can't complain about a free 8x upgrade!

Cendyne-Verbatim to LiteOn LTR-32123S to LiteOn LTR-40125S 40x12x48. No noticeable increase in noise, either.

As long as you have a disc in there that the drive is able to read at max speed, there's a very noticeable increase in noise.

Its a Optorite CW3201..... Pics. Probably not upgrabable, looks different. Go back and exchange with a box labled w/ 12-digit serial# like 21221xxxxxxx. Go to another CC if possible to exchange it.

On your model, maybe. I can definitively say there is NO INCREASE IN NOISE coming from my Cendyne/Verbatim turned Lite-On. I've burned, I've ripped, I've done the watusi.

ok.. funny things happen

I flash my 32132s into 40125s under XP

everything seems fine

I notice the following

1. when burner READ disc, it's louder than before, sounds like JET take off, don't know it's the disc or burner..

2. when burn @ 40x with Fuji 24x Taiyo Yuden disc, my 32x cd-rom, 12x dvd-rom can't read back the data fast enough,
burn divx @ 40x and have serious lagging problem for divx playing on both cd-rom / dvd-rom

3. However, I copy back the divx on cdr into hard disk, and problem seems gone ?

1 million $$ question ...

4. So is burning @ 40x a problem of the cdr or my cd-rom / dvd-rom is NOT fast enough to read 40x disc ?

btw, is there any Mt. Rainer software so I can use it as a floppy ? I don't see there is any option in Nero

Pls advice, thanks in advance

You guys REALLY care about that 30s improvement in speed? :p The risks plus the time/effort makes me unwilling already for 30s.

In my Athlon system, I might not have noticed at all...the system's already so $*%& loud. Going from 40x to 48x on the exact same drive is going to have an increase in noise. How much you notice it is a different matter.

No, I don't care about the 30s in speed, in fact, it sound like a jet engine in my quiet dell pc..
+ my old cd-rom don't like cdr burn in 40x

I am eyeing on the MT. RAINER, this is going to be the NEXT big thing on the CDRW, which allow u to use cdrw like a "REAL" floppy instead of going though 30 minutes formating a cdrw

however, seems few software actually support it

Using Panflo's to make a super quiet system here, so I would notice any changes, and the upgrade did not increase noise one bit. Still quiet.

Besides gaining 30 seconds with this safe and easy upgrade, other advantages are:
More modern drive. Instead of having a 6 to 12 month old drive, it now compares with a 1 month old drive, in both speed and features.
Adds to resale value. When you upgrade regularly, and sell old parts, these little things make a difference.
Firmware upgrade is like free cash!

Let me try this question another way...Is the XS0X firmware the *only one* that can be flashed?

To everyone talking about Mt. Ranier format...is this for CDR discs, or CDRW discs? Cause I assumed it was for CDRW disks, and in XP I can just drag and drop things to my burner in Windows Explorer, it puts it in a queue, then burns it when I tell it to. I tried it last night after flashing, and it works great...brought the disc to school and it works fine too. So am I missing something, or is this already supported in WinXP (sp1) ?
