Stopped at Office Max today on the way home from work, sales guy casually mentioned the burners were on sale for $20 out the door. Picked up 2 Cendyne 48x24x48's. I've had this burner before, little noisy but worked great. For $20 and no rebate hassle,, what the heck.
 
Most credit cards offer warranty protection for free, and in most cases double your warranty up to a max of 3 yrs. And no it doesn't matter if a company goes out of business.

Got $299 for my V5 that died ... 🙁
 
We have some very observant people on AT. Yep, Cendyne is out of business. Yep, it is Khypermedia. And $20 w/no rebate is cheap for a burner, maybe for a Christmas present? Oops, no one said that. 😉

Should add I/O Magic to that list. The 48x16x48 drive was also on unadvertised clearance for $19.99. After comparing firmware version strings, I guess it must be a Benq drive. Oh well. I was hoping for the Cyberdrive. At least it wasn't a BTC.

The good news: Inside the box, was a 52x24x24 drive, with a small slip of paper explaining the free upgrade! 52x burner, for $20 out-the-door, not a bad deal at all. I only wish it was a LiteOn, that would have been icing on the cake too. 🙂

Well, actually, it would make more sense if you end up getting a Cendyne, as the mfg is out of business, and therefore there is no mfg warranty support. I guess it really wasn't necessary with the I/O Magic drives I picked up, as they state a one year mfg warranty on the box. (I had initially thought that the mfg warranty was only 90 days.) But... depending on how they decide to deal with the plan, in a year, if it breaks down, they *might* end up replacing it with the nearest equivalent replacement drive, which in a year, will probably be a low-end DVD-burner that can also burn CD-Rs. 🙂
Ok, realistically, who knows, but for only $4, if it breaks in a year, I can return it to an OfficeMax retail store, no hassling with mailing an RMA, etc. (The included documentation states that the customer has to pay shipping for the RMA for I/O Magic.) $4 is probably cheaper than what the shipping would cost.
 
I snagged two of these today, haven't opened the boxes yet but they'll make great Xmas gifts, I'm sure. The salesman didn't even *know* they were on sale and said they had a buttload in the stock room 🙂

Well, at least some of the stores got in a big shipment of the K-Hypermedia 48x CD-RW drives for the BF sale, and my local one must have gotten in a shipment after that as well, as they were sold out on BF, but now have a huge stack (or had, as of a few days ago), a pile of them left for $19.99. I picked up one I/O Magic 48x, which turned out to be a 52x Benq (5224P model), and so I picked up another two I/O Magic ones later on that night. I suppose I could have purchased a K-Hypermedia 48x model, but I wasn't sure whether I would be getting a Benq or a BTC, and felt that I would have more luck getting another free upgrade to a 52x with the I/O Magic boxes. I haven't opened either one of mine yet, not sure if I want to give them for gifts or not.

Edit: Update, opened one of my other I/O Magic 48x16x48 drives, and it too, was a 52x24x52 (Benq 5224P) in the box, also mfg. on Nov. of 2002.. I feel confident that the third remaining drive will be a 52x as well. Wish I had picked up a couple more. They seem to burn alright so far, even to "cheap" Memorex/CMC media. Great deal, thanks for posting it.

 
There was one at my local store when I was there, passed it up (I've got two 40x burners sitting next to me doing nothing).
