Just courious, why would you want -R over +R? I read somewhere, (PC Magazine?), that the +R is at about 80% of the market. I've got the Sony 500 so it doesn't matter to me, but I've been buying the +RWs so that I can use them in my DVD recorder.

indeed +R is more popular, as it tends to be more compatable with more dvd players than the -r format. I think this Cendyne is a rebadged Pioneer, the last one I got from cendyne was anyway.

Hmm not sure where you read that in PC Magazine... I read it all the time and I can't recall that ever being printed. In either case that isn't true. Both are about equal right now. I just have -R media and the Pioneer A05 is the fastest 4X burner out there as well. :)

The formats could be just about equally popular, but all the deals I ever see are for the +R/RW format. E.G. Staples and OM. Hopefully that means the + will be the last one standing.

So is this a repackaged Pioneer drive or is it something else? Is this a good drive overall?

as far as I can tell all Cendyne drvies are rebadged, at least everyone I've ever bought was, most are Pioneer and Lite-on, but I've heard of some others. I've never had a drive from them fail my expectations.
Will Someone explain to me why the +r medias are more expensive?
Because the +r drives are more popular I suppose, kinda like when lexmark and hp ink cartridge prices went through the roof some years back. when cannon and printronix slowly fell from popularity

This definitely isn't a repackaged Pioneer seeing as Pioneer makes -R drives. My guess is that it's a rebadged NEC 1100A

What's this +/- mumbo jumbo?

Where can I read up on what to use?

Is this a decent drive? What can this DVD burner do that my 24X Lite-on CDR can't? Other than file size. I need an excuse to get something else :p

Can this burn regular cds too?

+ / - are the two different types of media out there. Practically, there isn't much difference. Just buy + media if you have a dvd+r burner or buy - media if you have a dvd-r burner. + media is a bit more expensive

It burns/reads dvds and cds. Your cdr burns/reads cds. Nothing extra.

There was a bogus article that said DVD+R made up 80% of DVD writers. And yet they went on to say that DVD-R disks made up 46% of all DVD-R media sales. Boy that 20% is buying lots of disks!! What might be true is 80% of all DVD burners for the month they did their study might have been + burners. If you look at the whole base of burners out there, I would bet DVD-R still holds the lead just because it has been around longer. And most of the +/- owners are buying DVD-R disks because they are cheaper right now.

Both formats are fine. Both are virtually the same percentage compatible with the wide base of existing DVD players, DVD-R getting the slight lead in compatibility (according to http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvd ) As long as blanks of both formats remain available for the life of your burner, you should not have any problem. I don't think running out of blank media will be an issue with either drive, especially when you factor in the useful life of the drive (I've had my Pioneer DVD-RW drive for only four months and I literally think it has already paid for itself.)

Good useful post SimMike2. But somehow I think that it'll fall on deaf ears. After all, how could you possibly compare to someone's brother's sister's dog groomer's boyfriend's psychiatrist's secretary who told them that all 1337 h4x0rZ get DVD+R and that DVD+R 0WnZ DVD-R?

$229.94(sales price) -$40 instant savings -$30Mail in Rebate =$159.94 -$30 off $150 online coupon(go find it yourselves *ahem* chunky bifold *ahem*) = 129.94

Unfortunately, you can't use a dollar off coupon for a particular product on the Staples web-site, if you are already using an instant rebate coupon for the same product. I believe the same holds true for their in-store coupons too.

However, even at that price, this is a great deal, because this is the NEC ND-1100A drive, just packed inside a CenDyne box (not even rebadged). This seems to be the same drive which is currently being sold by HP, TDK and many other big brand names.

I bought it about a month back when Staples was selling it for $229.99 with a $50 rebate, and it works like a charm! I was also able to use a $50 off $200 coupon for this order, bringing down the total to 129.99 (after rebate/before taxes) - I have heard that all of those coupons have expired in May, and the best coupons that you can find now are the $30 off $150 ones.

Hope that helps.

it's not an instant rebate coupon, it's just instant savings, the price reflected after instant savings is what goes in your cart, not the original sales price, and yes you can sometimes use a dollar off coupon for instant savings coupon, I've done it before with thier modem deals where they had 5 off 5 coupon on the modems sku then used a 30 off 150 on it and a hard drive I was buying. as long as the total was 155 or more it was doable.

edit: sorry this was supposed to be edited into my last post.

The + burners are probably going to win in the long run because the retailers want to sell the more expensive media. However, the safest thing to do is to buy a dual format burner. I just bought a TDK 4x dual burner for $196.72 from Dell ($299.95-15%-15%-$20 MIR, free shipping).

If the DVD writer gets added to the cart for $189.94, then isn't that the sales price instead of $229.94? I have mostly seen Staples offer "instant savings" only in the form of coupon codes, where you add the item to the shopping cart for a particular price, and then apply a given coupon code to receive the instant savings discount. This also holds true for items which are published in their local circulars, like this "Norton Internet Security" software, which is free after savings and rebates:

Symantec Norton Internet Security 2003

And once you apply an instant savings coupon to an item, you can NOT apply that item towards the fulfilment of conditions for another coupon. This is exactly what I meant when I said "you can't use a dollar off coupon for a particular product on the Staples web-site, if you are already using an instant rebate coupon for the same product" - notice that I use the term "product", and not "order".

Staples clearly states that the conditions for each coupon should be fulfilled exclusively - you actually supported my point by mentioning your modem deal - you couldn't include the 5 bucks spent on the modem in evaluating the total for your 30 off 150 coupon - that is why the total needed to be more than $155 - trust me, I've tried many different coupon & item combinations in the past few weeks, and have also spoken to some guys in their Customer Service department.

The only way to add the Dollar Off coupon would be if the drive gets added to the Shopping Cart for the lesser amount, without applying any instant savings coupon. If it does, it sure would be a great buy - here are some more technical specs for the drive:

CenDyne Part number: CDICD00225
NEC Sweedish Site ND-1100A Page
ND-1100A Detailed Specifications(PDF)

Hope that helps - Prashant.

read and learn, others here already know this but I'll be kind....just one more time and in the simplest terms I can reduce myself to.

Look at the current adds, find the
30GB Maxtor $79.95 - $50 combined savings=$29.94!

when you add it to the cart your cart showes it to be 59.95 instead of 79.95, then you have a $30 mail in rebate. the reason it's 20 less in your cart when you add it, is because of a $20 instant savings, NOT a $20 instant rebate code. Most if not All of these in my thread have a $xx instant savings, not instant rebate codes.

I used the $5off$5 coupon example to show you, that you where right about the use of mulitple $off codes, but the first sentance explained the use of INSTANT SAVINGS VS. INSTANT COUPON.

PM me if you have any more confusion(I'll be more than happy to explain further if need be), but at the very least stop thread crapping with your whining.

Read the Forum rules. thread crapping of anykind will not be allowed and will often land you a "time out". I came close to one myself because like most AT newbies I didn't read the whole Forum rules myself and the Mods where kind enough to be gentle on me because I didn't have enough sense to read the rules. kinda like stepping into a conversation you know nothing about and making a fool of myself(yourself)

I put the question mark at the end of PC Magazine because I'm not sure if that's where I read it or not. I've got a hard time remembering my name sometimes :p. BTW, my Sony DRU-500A also burns -R and +R at 4x. I don't have a preference for either format, but since I have a home DVD recorder that uses the +R/RW discs, I usually buy those. I did have a -R home recorder, but took it back because on home units, the +Rs are a better choice.
