HOT? Cendyne DVD-R/RW Drive for $200 at Office Max

OfficeMax - Cendyne DVD R/RW Drive $199.99 (Coupon & Rebate)

There are many DVD writing standards so be careful which one you pick. I have a HP200i which is a DVD+R/w drive. The Cendyne is a DVD-R drive. There is a difference. Do your research before you buy.

Hmm, I too thought it could be gotten for $150 at first, that would have made it hot. As is, for $200 (with a rebate in limbo) it is not as good a deal as I have seen. DVD-RW is the way to go, but it is a 2X burner for 25-50 dollars more there was a deal last week for the 4X burner. Personally, I would expect some deals to come soon with these 2X burners, as 4X will soon take over.

which is the kind of drive taht you can burn dvd movies for, and play them back on your dvd player...?

DVD-R has the best real world record. The DVD+R people (Phillips mostly) try to sell the marketing idea that theirs is better, but the anecdotal evidence suggests this is not true. I have a DVD-R (superdrive in my Mac) and it has written 5 movies on 5 different disks (one being an RW). All the movies play on every DVD player I've tried. This included my Aiwa, an Apex, Deawoo, sony and one other brand. These are not even the name brand disks. They are Meritline's sampler pack (www.meritline.com).

When asking about compatability, be sure to inquiry about labels. They cause more problems than any other factor. So if a person has trouble with their DVD's, ask if they are labeled or not.

Technically, both can burn movies and if your standalone supports the media, then you can obviously watch them. Supposedly the dvd-r has better compatibility than the dvd+r with standalones. I own this very Cendyne drive and love it.

Since most DVDs are dual layered (over 7gb on dvd), you can't actually do a direct copy. You have to rip, edit ifos, re-encode the video, author, etc. before you burn these. It's kinda hard at first, but it gets easy once you know what you are doing. The older movies that are not dual-layered will fit on a normal dvd-r with no problem.
