the Nokia costs bout $500 USD
the Ericsson Cost about $200 USD

if money wasn't a consideration, what would you prefer?

Nokia 8890 if it was my choice. I haven't even seen the Ericcson phone so my choice is a little biased.

Isn't the Ericsson T28s World like 125 bucks? I am a firm believer that the Ericsson is a much better phone than the Nokia. The older Nokia's had more features than the Ericsson GSM's, but now the are pretty similar, the only exception being in their looks.

I would go for the T28.

well, the T28 is the new one from Ericsson to compete with the 8890.
pretty much half the thickness with the automatic flip. looks totally amazing, but it has a MASSIVE antenna. If the Ericsson didn't have that humongous antenna, I would have bought it with the blink of an eye. Its just that... ugh, antenna

I didn't think the Ericsson antenna is that big. It's pretty streamlined actually from the earlier GSM models. I own an Ericsson T18 in the mid east (a GSM one) and the antenna on that is decent as well. The T28 antenna is pretty cool looking, and one of the best I've seen from Ericsson.

I have also heard that over a period of time the Nokia's that don't have a visible antenna tend to lose signal strength. Something for consideration.

i have a T-28 and i love it! it's thinner than the nokia and you can get an antenna Mod for like $20 which makes it smaller, i got one that lights up cause i like those... i also love having the flip cover (i bought one for my nokia 5190 when i used to have that) and feature wise the T-28 is pretty good. Also consider you get Solitaire and Tetris as the games and it's much cheaper in most of the places i've seen :)

edit: Ericsson also has the option for you to "key-in" your own tones so if your musically inclined you can get this program that has a lil keyboard on it, you can make your own original tone and key it into your phone... he he... real cool feature

Nokia 8890 for the pure geek factor. It has a hyper-white-ish backlit screen so it looks pretty p!mp :) My friend got one... so much envious! Both phones work worldwide.

I'd definately go for the T28, I have a bunch of friends who have it and I'm totally jealous!

From the looks and the feel I really must say I like it....
I dunno if you have the SMS message system in the states wíth all your weird pay-when-reciecving-a-call and the roaming-in-some-places-but-not-all stuff but if you are in to that at all, I'd get the chatboard too, the small keyboard you hook into it.

or maybe get the small mp3 player too, one of the T28 friends of mine has one of those....arg!

I don't know if you meant T28 or T28world

anyhow, definitely 8890, hidden retractable antenna. IMHO, menus are easier to use. I think you can get one around $200 if you are from the Bay Area.

I have the Ericsson T28. I got it for US$60 (because I signed a 1 year contract -- I actually downgraded to a lower plan, as I was paying over US$100/month in my previous airtime plan). You may want to find a similar deal there (to get a new phone @ a decent price).

Oh yeah, I read somewhere that the T28 has the highest "radiation" levels when compared to the new phones (the T28 is on the top of the list, followed by Nokia, I think). Nevertheless, I love this phone and all its cool features and gadgets (e.g., add-on MP3 player).

Get the 8890. The phone is awesome. A friend of mine has it. He can vouch that the phone is excellent. All around phone. But for that price... you can try egay. My friend picked up the phone on these boards for a 12x Plextor CDRW trade. He scored, big time!

I'm a Nokia zealot (and firm believer than the Nokia 6190 is a nearly perfect cell phone) so my first impulse is to say get the Nokia 8890 but then I read these reviews and the top complaints were:

1) Weak battery life.
2) Too expensive.
3) You're paying for the brand name, other phones offer better battery life and features for less money.

:(

I went for the 9@9 Xenium. This is a feature packed phone that looks great (Not sure if it is a world phone though). Nokia make great phones, but it's like everyone is part of the same club. On my floor alone 5 people have 8890s (and about 20 have 3210s)

Looking at the link to reviews i posted - neither the Ericsson or Nokia get particularly good reviews. A lot of people mention a potential fault with the Ericsson. Also neither of these phones is WAP. I find WAP to be very handy and even the cheapest phones these days have it.

I have the T28 (had it for almost a year now). The stock battery only last about 2-3 days (that's just standby), so you would probably need another battery or a higher capacity one. I do like the fact it answers when you flip it open, and it is pretty light/small. I don't know, they will probably be about the same for you, just which one looks better to you (do you care?) and how much money you want to spend.

I have the T28 and it's a damn good phone.

The ONLY downfall is it's battery life... but ericsson knows this and that is why it has a Lithium-Polymer battery which you can charge at ANY time without damaging it. both Lithium-Ion and Lithium-Metal damages if you for example charge them when they're already half full.

So you can charge it whenever you can and you'll always have battery left, unless you go for a 4 day trip into the forest :)

Anyway that T28 also have the Chatboard and the Mp3-handsfree which both have very strong geek factor, I have both :)

And don't trust all the reviews... the first T28's had a software problem which was fixed a long time ago.

Anyway listen to what people that have the 8890 and the T28 think about it, and then make your choice, as I don't know anything about that 8890.

The only thing I know is that Ericsson also makes the base systems for mobile phones so I think they have a better understanding of the whole technology involved. I've usually gotten a better reseption at bad areas with my Ericsson then my friends has had with their Nokias (both on the same operator of course)

Also remember that the T28 world isn't a Triband phone it only has the 900 and the 1900 band.

My fingers hurt now so I'll stop writing :)

(edit) There is of course higher capacity batterys one which has 11h talktime I think :) And the ultra slim that comes with it has a pretty decent talk time something like 2.5h but as already pointed out the stand by isn't very exciting (/edit)
