Cellphone replacement question

I have a cellphone that my parents got for me for college. The service is in NC and I have insurance on the phone. Lately the phone has been shutting off randomly and in general just not being very cooperative. I'm thinking of going into Verizon and getting the phone replaced. My question is, will i be able to replace it myself if the account is under my dad's name? And also, the phone i have now is no longer offered by Verizon, so would i have to buy a brand new phone or would i get to choose say a cheaper one after the $50 copay...

IIRC if you have insurance you pay a fee regardless and you either get a refurbished phone or a choice of "comparable" ones.

With Sprint the insurance is through a 3rd party. Dial and 800 number and it'll get taken care of. Not sure how VZW works.

Can you cancel the contract and then get a new one (with new phone), or does it not work like that in the US?

Um, yeah, that wasn't the best advice. Cancelling a contract is expensive.

OP, go to the store. You can exchange if something's wrong. They won't question. They'll probably try to fix it first, but if they can't, they'll replace it. Many phones have a problem like that, and some carriers aren't so good about replacing phones with that issue. Take a shot and see what you can get.
