Cellphone Noobie *help*

I am looking for a plan in the Buffalo, Albany Area.... Won't use it much at all, and I'd probbaly use it most on weekends and nights calling long distance. I think 200 day minutes, and 2000 night and weekend minutes would be more than enough... How come all the plans are real expensive. I hear spirnt has an unpublished plan for like 30 bucks a month! But i don't know how i could get it since I would be a new customer... Any advice? Thanks

being new you have to go with the published rates. the only people that have the unpublished rates are the call-in customer care retention reps. not even the CSRs at the sprint stores can do those rates.

First I would ask your friends/family/co-workers which cell phone provider they have, how's the signal strength, call quality, dropped calls, spotty coverage, etc.

Most cell phone plans require a committment of at least 1 year, so you don't want to go with a provider just because they're cheap.

Off the top of my head I would seriously consider Verizon, VoiceStream and Sprint PCS.

Right, definitely ask your friends or family around your area which is carrier has the best connection. Just because one provider has good service in a certain area does not mean they'll necessarily have good service in another area. So if someone that lives far away from you says "So and so has great service.." doesn't mean that you'll get great sevice in your area from so and so. But overall, I hear Sprint and Verizon have the best service.

i have sprint and it works great for me.. i'm not sure how good the coverage is up there where you are though.
