What is the procedure in doing the whole number porting?

Here is what I'm thinking:
1) Get new service
2) Cancel old service
3) Port number

or do I cancel old service first, then get new service and port the number as I activate the service?

1)Get new service
2)Port number (contact new service provider)
3)Old service provider will cancel you automatically. Contact them after the number is ported just to make sure.

Do not cancel service b4 porting your number. You will be unable to port if you do so

Thing is, I don't want old provider to cancel me automatically.
Need to make sure they don't sneak in a Early Termination Fee or some other sort of BS charge that I would have to dispute for days.

I went to Verizon, they ported my number and cancelled my old one I believe. I didn't have to do anything other than show up there with an old bill showing the number was actually mine.

well, they won't sneak in the ETF if you're out of contract. if you're still under contract, then you have to pay.

Yeah I'm planning to switch to Verizon, but I'm under contract with Nextel right now. But right now, there's a small loophole in their contract that I can get out without ETF, so I'm planning to do it.
