anyone know what happened to the law they were trying to pass as far as keeping cell numbers eventhoght you change carriers?

Haven't heard of anything like that. You have no "right" to keep your number; you're just leasing it from the company.

Plus, it's a LOT of trouble to transfer "ownership" of a number from one company to another.

There was a motion in Los Angeles to swap area codes for some 2 million cell phone users that I think got beat down.

From the article below "Carriers, after opposing the measure, won a one-year delay of what they call and unfunded government mandate, until November 2003"

Your refering to number portability. The FCC is still working on this. You can read about it here (or search Google for cell number portability)

I highly doubt that it will ever come about. It's a tremendous logistical nightmare. The cell phone companies own blocks of exchanges (the exchange is the first three digits after the area code), not blocks of numbers. The current system is set up such that it's almost impossible to switch around exchanges.

I highly doubt that it will ever come about.

It was mandated that they support this in 1996, right now they have until November unless they get a further extention.

i think if this passed, it would free up many numbers. what i mean is that .... lets say i change to a diff carrier, then the old number i had is in a pool for god knows how long before it is eventually given out. this waiting period would become obsolete if i could just carry my number over.

i dont know how insane this would be logistically...but from a consumer point of view, it would be great.

cell phone carriers are already taking steps to impiment this, right now we are starting to buy phone number in blocks of 1,000 instead of 10,000 like we used to....look for number portability later this year or early next year
