The thief probably knows using it is too risky so he's just going to sell it and when that poor guy tries to get the username cleared, he's going to find out he got screwed...

All they have to do is take the SIM card out and it's anyone's phone.

If you still have the box, it should have the serial numbers on it and that would help the police track it down.

See my earlier posts in this thread. The SidekickII ties the IMEI to your username on the Sidekick/Hiptop network. Without calling T-Mobile to get the username cleared, it's just a phone. None of the features that make a Sidekick a Sidekick will work.
