How happy is he gonna be??

I can't believe he's been using a computer with 256mb of ram as the 'family computer' for 7 years now..... an e-machines to boot!

I can't run my netbook with 1GB of ram because it bogs down 😱

very unhappy because you messed up his windows

and where's my comet cursor?

i dont get why someone like that would even get a g530, for just a little more you can get something much better, esp if you keep your stuff for a while

That's got to be a troll.

Considering what they are upgrading from, don't you think that's a massive improvement? And if they have bigger needs in the future, can always drop in a i5-2400 CPU or something.

Exactly... He's not gonna stop knowing me, so if in the future he thinks his computer is slow, I'll A) reinstall W7, or B) upgrade my i3-2100 and give him mine ;-)

Anyhoo, he's also going from a huge ugly e-machines tower to this:

Pokerstars actually stopped running on his computer after their last update, I'm thinking XP with Pokerstars running needed more than 256mb ram, LOL.

All he does is play Pokerstars and maybe watch .. youtube .. which I'm sure youtube wouldn't have worked on his either, lol.

The next upgrade route will be SSD

I'd say do that now, so you won't have to mess with it anymore. 120GB SSDs have been going for as cheap as $70, and even the super highly rated Samsung 830 in 128GB size has been $90 on hot deals lately. How much is a new HDD costing these days?

Nice! Did you buy it already? If not, I have another suggestion. Use an Antec ISK 110 VESA and mount that puppy to the back of his monitor. 😎

what case is that?

a g530 should be perfect for anything but driving big graphics cards and video encoding for years to come. processors have far outstripped common software requirements.

I believe it's a lian li, I can't remember the model number (lian lis naming conventions are hard to remember).

edit: yeah it's the PC-Q07

didn't realize it was that small. or that's not a 20oz bottle of water

Dimensions8.19" x 7.60" x 11.02"
Pretty small!

Built it... I think November last year? Didn't have a buyer for it, just felt like building a tiny computer...

Finally he decided he wants it 🙂

Wow thats pretty nice looking, very compact.

Couple internal pics I took while building it:

I ended up putting the HDD upside-down, so I could install a GT220 video card to take that off the CPU. I could/should have used a 2.5" drive to allow for more cooling of the GPU, but in tests it never got unreasonably hot

Update... He still likes it, definitely not a computer guy... it works and he likes that.

His kids on the other hand, have been playing WoW constantly on it, I'm glad I gave him at least SOMETHING for an aftermarket graphics card.. Even though it's only a GeForce GT220...

Still working flawlessly, woo!

I still have a Celeron D 2.53 GHz processor lying around; it dragged everything at stock, and was sort of passable at 2.9ish Ghz. Replaced it for a Prescott 3.2 Ghz in the rig it was housed in; that thing lags a little too if I don't bump up the FSB up to 205 Mhz. I also built a new computer with the Celeron G550. That thing files in Linux if you use LXDE.
