Celeron Questions

I'm going to upgrade my old Dell after seeing Robert Hancock's excellent page on the topic.

So, the big question is, what processor to use?

Intel Pentium III 1GHz, Slot 1- very expensive, $218

Intel Celeron 1.1GHz, S370 with a slotket, $85 + slotket

Powerleap 1.2GHz, comes pre-assembled w/ HSF and all, $169

One thing I can't figure out- I haven't seen any Coppermine 1.2GHz Celerons- are they made?

Does the Powerleap upgrade allow you to use Tualatin core chips? Then I could presumably get an even faster Celeron.

What slotket to use? I haven't found many for sale- Soyo has one that I've seen on googlegear as well as a place called STSI.

STSI also has the ASUS S370-L and the -DL, since they're not on ASUS' site, I don't know what the differences are.

Any suggestions on a good S370 HSF that will fit on the slotket? If I get a retail Celeron, I'll use the stock HSF- the thing
can't be overclocked on a Dell MB anyway.

Hey,

Fow low budget, I recommend ASUS TUSL2-C and Celeron 1000A, the new core. The Mobo is $100 and CPU (Retail)$78. I am not overclocking; but I tested and it juns 1333 with Intel supplied fan.

Thanks, but considering that this is a Dell system, I can't just swap MBs.

Also, that would be more expensive, trying to keep this limited to a simple CPU swap, as the
computer already has decent peripherals otherwise and this system will mainly be used for
email and web browsing but I want to update it enough that I can put WinXP on it if I want.

I would go for a Celeron for an email machine. With a good video card, you can play the newest games, too. Googlegear.com or Newegg.com has the 1ghz celeron retail box for $79/shipped and the 1.1ghz retail for $89/shipped. I would hit the for sale/trade forum for a coppermine-compatible slotket. the whole deal could be done for about $100. The celerons, even at the 100mhz FSB speed, can perform up to 15% slower than their P3 counterparts. My 3Dmark2001 with a celeron 900 OCed to 1116 scored only a little higher than my P3 700 OCed to 1008. Lastly, will the motherboard support a 133FSB speed? If not, then just get the Celeron. Otherwise, a slot 1 P3 866 (<>$100) or 933 (<>$110) would be cost effective choices considering the performance difference of the faster bus speed and more L2 cache compared to the Celerons.

No 133 FSB support- MB is a Dell version of the Intel Seattle SE440BX.

I think I'll go with a 1.1GHz Celeron, then. That sounds like a cheap upgrade.

Yes, the C1.1 would be the best bang for the buck. The other options are faster, but cost more. Your choice.

CleanerPA, what processor and speed is it running in your Dell machine right now?

As for the slocket, ASUS S370DL is good. High quality, trouble-free, good OC'er. All the slockets are now hard to be found.. good luck hunting.

If you aren't planning for OC'ing, then you don't have to get a nice HSF. Get any cheap ol' one and should do it. Dell computers won't let you OC anyway..

The best Sloket adpater by far is the MSI MS-6905. It is rock stable. I was able to overclock a 633MHz Celeron to over 1.05GHz using one...

Thanks for the info, I think I better pick up this Asus slotket before it's gone, then.

The machine in question is a Dell XPS R350- 350MHz Pentium II, 100MHz FSB.

I'll go w/ a Celeron 1.1 and an Asus slotket- getting a gigahertz for about $120 isn't a bad deal, right?

I think the Celeron is a retail box, so it should have a HSF already.

These adapters are a rapidly dying breed. You could pick a good one for $10, but now they are asking for $30! You can get yourself one at EBay. Also check UBid and look under computer components.

Careful, I have an Intel SE440BX and it won't run CPUs higher than 450MHz(I think you might need a Powerleap adapter to run higher).

oldfart when I tried a CPU with a speed over 450MHz an Intel message would popup on-screen saying to run a cpu 450MHz or lower.

I think there is a certain BIOS you have to use. The older and newer ones didn't work, but there was a certain BIOS that would allow it. The Dell version of it is A07

I'm not saying you're wrong, as I don't know the difference between the OEM Dell MB and the Intel Seattle. However, Robert Hancock's page, which oldfart kindly linked to, shows a 350MHz Dell XPS R (the same as my machine) being upgraded first to a 800MHz PIII, then a 1.2 GHz Celeron w/ the Powerleap adapter. Links on the page show slotket upgrades to S370 PIII and Celeron as well, including a 1GHz Celeron.

Right now, I'm inclined to get a slotket and a 1.1 GHz Celeron and try it out.

cleanerPA, I was just giving you my experience with this MB(Intel version)...it might or might not be as easy as swapping CPUs(might need to find a particular BIOS file, etc).

I've never have done that upgrade myself, but if you go to the Delltalk forums, tons of people have with good results. I'd say you should be good as long as you use the right BIOS.

tjdavis1138, all Celerons 800 and up are 100 MHz FSB. The BH6 will work just fine.
