Celeron III?

What are the chances of Intel ever creating a Celeron III for the Pentium 4 motherboards?
I think it would make the platform more appealing for everybody.
Although it would make the performance gap between the Pentium4 and the Celeron not as great.
In my opinion it would help Intel compete better with AMD.
They could release Celerons at 800Mhz, 1Ghz, and 1.2Ghz.
I really like the way the Durons and Athlons can use the same motherboards and wonder why Intel is not doing the same thing.

I do understand that there is a much higher cost for the Pentium 4 motherboards at the moment. Once they are more mainstream what is to stop this type of thing from happening?

They already released it at 800 Mhz. Why should they bother basing one on the P4? The Celeron 2 will out perform a P4 clock for clock as it is. And its core is good for 1 Ghz. They may eventually move to a different socket, but not at least until the P4 itself has moved to another one.

intel (i think i heard somewhere) will phase out the celeron and keep the p3 to fight it out against the duron and push the athlon against the P4.

Once intel gets there P4 optimised compliers out, i think there will be a huge increase in preformance with the P4..

shame AMD isn't pushing athlon optimised compliers etc for there cpu's.... 🙁

Actually, Intel is phasing out the Celeron. The P3 will be their "budget" processor with the P4 as their high end solution. So "bye-bye" Celeron in this coming year.

they are already making the celeron 3. i saw some pictures of cpuid which showed the stepping and speed and stuff like that. i forgot the site name. it was a link from hardocp

It seems to me that it only makes sense that eventually they will make a P4 based celeron. Eventually, processors will break the 2GHz barrior and the P3 won't be able to fill the low end gap that will be created.
