EDITED to "Celeron D335 vs. P4 2.26 - which is fastest at default or OC'd?"

I just got the SOYO "SY-P4I865PE Plus DRAGON 2 V1.0" 865PE Chipset Motherboard For Intel Socket 478 CPU and I need to pick a cpu. I'm not sure right now what it'll be used for but my guess is an economy pc.
I'm thinking of the Celeron-D. This mobo can go either 533 or 800 on the fsb and I believe the C-D can overclock to 800 from 533 although I don't know which of those can best OC to 800.
I have some PC2700 I can use so I just may not OC right away.

I just did a little reading and this chip compares in price with the Celeron 335. Although it may not OC as much as the 'D' it is probably faster, no? I guess I need to go with a default 533 chip so I can OC it thru it's fsb as these are multiplier locked, no?
This recommended chip is the cheapest P4 offered at newegg and at a multiplier of 17 will clock to 3.4GHz at 200 fsb.

Get the Celeron D. You did say "economy," right? That means cheap. The Celeron D 320 is $77 at Newegg. I picked up one at Fry's for $89.99 with a motherboard. That's pretty cheap. If you want to try overclocking to 800MHz FSB, you'll need a chip with a low multiplier, making the 320 better for overclocking than the faster Celeron D chips. I think it more likely for a Celeron D 320 to reach 800MHz FSB than the P4 2.26. The 2.26 is $40 more than the 320 ($115+2 shipping at Newegg). You choose.

Thanks, Zap. I took the 320 back (unopened) to Frys over a week ago. I was rewarded for my patience today with a $70 325/ECS combo back at Frys.

:Q OMG, that rocks. You now have the basis for a reasonable "economy" PC. Since you already have a motherboard you may be able to sell the ECS board for $20 or so. A $50 CPU that may or may not hit 3.6GHz is a hot deal. Ignore all those Celeron haters. :p

Thanks for the encouragement.
I, too, have never been enthusiastic of the Celeron, but the D is different and performance/$$ is the true name of the game IMO. Even if in most cases the Sempron is a little better value than the C-D, in my case I wanted a cpu for that Soyo I got.
The fact is, I did regret ordering the Soyo very soon after placing the order, but not soon enough to cancel. Since it's a "return for same item only" purchase I was stuck. Now I'm just hoping for the best on both the rebate and product reliability. I won't be doing that again. :frown:

Ahhh, that Newegg FAR deal. Good luck on that, I dislike rebates so I didn't grab one.

About to finish my "tests" with this CeleronD 320...

You can read the "review" CeleronD vs P4

It's very simple and in Portuguese, but can use a translator or look at pics ;)

Max OC I got Here...

At 4.000Mhz it "feels" like a P4 @3400/3600 on normal use, but on benchmarks, near a 3000C.

No, I only work with Intel.
Sometime in the future some A64 939 will start to populate the tests, but for now, just Intel.

Stormgiant, nice work. Since I don't have an 875P chipset board I wonder if it is my CPU or my motherboard selection holding back my overclock on my own Deleron 320. Ah well, still a good value for $50.
