Celeron D vs Sempron-> Best bang for the buck @ Fry's?

I'm upgrading my p3 1.1ghz to play half-life2 and whatever new games that are coming out. Fry's has the BEST combo deals i've seen. Here's the current batch.

Intel Celeron D 330 Processor w/ Motherboard $79.99
AMD Sempron 2500+ Processor (boxed) w/ Motherboard $69.99

In the past, Fry's had the sempron 2400+ (boxed) for $59.

I;m thinking the 2400+ is best bang for the buck for Semprons. (i havent seen 2200+ combo deals)

Anyone know what's the price for the lowest Celeron D combo is? (celeron D 320?)

And which is the better deal? Sempron or Celeron D, assuming both combos at the same price?
 
given the Celeron D is based on prescott, I would think it is very overclockable, is this the case ?
 
You'll really want a socket 754 Sempron 3100+ for Half-Life 2, and you can upgrade to an Athlon 64 later if you wish. The Socket A Sempron is basically a rebadged Athlon XP (w/256kb L2 cache).

it looks like the sempron 2400+ and 2500+ is better price/performance than the 320 + 325.

the 330,335,340 is definitely > 2600/2800/3000, respectively.

but yeah, at the same price, the Celeron D > sempron (assuming comparing same speed)

i'm going for bang for the buck. sempron 3000+/mobo combo is $139. so i'm assuming the 3100+ is $149.

the 2400+ is $59, ~1/3 the cost of the 3100 but only ~30% less performance. (105 vs 130) according to this: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articl...isplay/sempron_10.html

yeah, according to that chart, the 2400+ is the absolute best bang for the buck.

as for sempron vs celeron D:

since the sempron 2500+ is 69, i'm assuming the 2600 is 79 @frys (the 2800 is 89)

thus celerom D 330 is better deal than 2600.

but i dont know what the pricing is for the 320, so i cant say if it beats the 2400 as absoltute BEST bang combo at frys

I agree. But if your budget won't allow that, based on the benchmarks I saw, I agree the CeleronD 330 is probably the better value (can't believe I said that). However, it is still $10 more than the 2500, so ????
 
Just get a DFI NFII Ultra Infinity and a 2400+ Mobile sckt A and be doien with. That is the best bang for your buck system out there unless you go down to a NF7-S. (This system will kill a Celeron-D)

The past weekend deal was an OEM Sempron 3100+ with motherboard (forgot which one) for $160. I picked up one of the Deleron 330 with motherboard (ECS PT800CE-A) for $80. The CPU will POST at up to 4.12GHz, but won't run stable.

Lucky you. My Deleron 320 will only POST at up to 3.97GHz on my P4P800 Deluxe. Currently running at only 3.6GHz because the SATA drive isn't happy otherwise. Do you get better results with keeping the voltage low? I originally just slapped the voltage to 1.60, and funny thing is that it won't POST at any higher voltage.

P4P800 don't post at 1.625 and 1.650.
Also, running ANY Prescott above 1,6 is wishing for a dead mobo. Mine post's at 4100 at 1.500, but not stable. Waiting for a 2.4A and a 2.8A to compare the extra cache.

 
Best bang for the buck at Fry's is the $110 2.4A w/ 848P Mobo. I've bought several of these combos; all do 3.0GHz at stock voltage; Windows/Apps are responsive, games are fast, and the Intel chipset on the motherboard keeps everything stable overclocked (it's the best ECS motherboard I've used so far...don't let the Fry's guys fool you into thinking one of the "upgraded" combo motherboards are better.

Toss it into a motherboard with voltage adjustments and it should hit 3.6GHz easy at 200FSB.
 
Zap, does the ECS PT800 mobo have voltage adjustments?

Keep in mind that normalized graph is highly skewed to favor Deleron. They included lots intel favored test suits according to both toms and Anands the 2800 sempron beats the deleron equivalent 335 in majority of testing. 9:4 and 8:6 resectivly.


Basically only encoding would I be buying a sempron equivalent. The CeleronD.

I don't agree with that statement. I've gone through THREE P4 2.4A chips and none of them would run at that speed. Oh, they might POST at that speed and they might go into Windows at that speed, but not what I would call stable. Not to say it isn't possible with a lucky chip, but I wouldn't want a spate of postings here saying "why can't I OC to that speed like everyone else can?" I've tried various boards such as Asus P4P800 Deluxe, Abit IS7, MSI PT880, Asus P4C800-E Deluxe, MSI 865PE Neo2.

Yes it does. :Q On the ECS PT800CE-A board that I received (rev1) BIOS has voltage adjustments for VCORE and RAM to the tune of 2%, 4%, 6%. Also the FSB can be increased by 1MHz increments to a certain extent.. However, just know that AFAIK the chipset doesn't have an AGP/PCI lock.

I've bought two Deleron combos from Fry's. Both came with retail box CPUs. The 330 cost $79.99 and came with the ECS PT800CE-A board. The 320 that I got a month ago cost more at $89.99, and came with an FIC Dynasty 865P chipset board (forgot exact model#, already sold it). The FIC board actually had TONS of overclocking features with one problem. The chipset was the 865P, meaning it doesn't officially support 800MHz FSB. Also, though it had voltage adjustments for AGP/VCORE/RAM, it did not have chipset voltage. After about 175MHz FSB or so the board would stop POSTing. Otherwise it was a typical 865P chipset board supporting SATA, dual channel DDR, Prescott support, all in all pretty typical for a mid-line board. It worked out great for overclocking a 533MHz FSB Northwood chip, which is what I sold it with.
