I bought a Celeron D a few months back. This is the retail 2.4ghz one. It comes with a fan. There's a gray sticker on the copper connector of the fan. I tried to remove it but its kinda sticky and it turns into a mess and I don't want goo to be on my copper connector. Am i supposed to remove it? And do you think I have to add thermal paste in there?

wow a sticker where the heatsink meets the cpu? the hell?

wait, I dont understand what area of the heatsink/fan you are talking about. Please specify a little bit more and myabe I can help

I hope he isn't talking about Intel's TIM pad, which he should have left alone.

Thermal Interface Material.

That's the thermal pad, it was supposed to be on there.

Next time don't remove it unless you're sure what it is.

Now clean the area and apply normal thermal compound.

no i didnt remove it. the gray piece sticker . i thought it was a protective sticker, i started scratching on the very corner and it became gooey. so no only 0.01% of that sticker is messed up

thanks guys

It's not a sticker, it's pre-applied thermal paste! It's supposed to improve the transfer of heat from the cpu to the heatsink.

Well, there SHOULD have been a protective platic coat over the TIM. That has to be peeled off.

but then ppl will do the idiot thing by not removing the protective layer and can fry their cpu, which ppl have done it the past this way by not removing the protective plastic over the thermal paste.

its hard to idiot proof everything. ppl will remove the thermal pad or leave the protective coating in. glad op didnt remove it. if op did removal it, get some thermal paste quick.

ok i am so confused. i actually stopped touching my celeron D now...

there's a protective coating on the TIM now? I only see the gray pad and i don't see any protective coating??? 😱

Usually the thermal interface material has a thin plastic sheet over it (similar to the peel-off stuff that you find covering watch and alarm-clock faces). This stuff is there to keep the TIM from getting dirty or scratched. If yours does not have this, then do not worry about it. The TIM is usually a dark gray color. The plastic covers that I have seen are usually a light blue. If all you see is TIM, then go ahead and stick it on!

Nothing wrong with being a noob. We all were.

yea but I think less noobish problems would have occured had he first got interested in computers during the pentium 100+ days... You can run a pentium with passive cooling and with out cooling as well but if you have no cooling, you could fry it.. And had he learned about computers during the 3.1 days, he would definately know much more now then he ever will learn starting now.

I had this Celeron D, fan died, and it got overheated, quickly threw it into the freezer. My mobo sucked anyway, never worked again. In fact, at the time, sparks flew out from where the fan was plugged in'ta.
Stupid retail fan. The heatsink got so hot after the fan died, that it nearly burnt my hands.
Anyway, the Celeron D works fine. Don't remove any stickers. The only thing you have to remove is the plastic covering beneath the heatsink. Then just plug 'n play.
