Celeron D 352 CPU temp?

Hi there:
Just installed a Celeron D 352 ( 3.2 GHz 512KB L2 ) and the Hardware monitor reported a CPU temperature of 62 C idle with the stock Intel HSF unit. Seemed a little high even with the higher CPU clock rate and extra L2 cache, compared to an idle CPU temp of 38-40 C of my Celeron D 351 ( 2.92 GHz 256KB L2 ). No overclocking in either case and the newer processor is supposed to consume less Watt based on its 65 u manufacturing tech. I doubled check the HSF and it seemed to be installed correctly. Any insight or is this just normal? Thanks!

62c at idle is definatly not normal. Put some load on it, and feel the heatsink. If the heatsink isn't hot to the touch, you aren't making good contact. Those heatsinks can be a pain to install sometimes. It's possible it's just a bad temp reading too, but not as likely.
 
Thanks Stevty. I'll try to look into the heartsink seating again...What would you suggest as the nominal CPU temp for the 352 as a benchmark?

 
Well, the Celeron D 341's we have at work idle in the mid 30's with the stock HSF.. so I think you'd be looking at something in the 40's.
 
I took the MB out of the chasis and ran the memtest86+ on the board. The CPU temperature after the test and reboot was 50 C. Ten minutes later, the CPU temp was actually slightly higher under idle condition at 51 C. I hope I am OK as the HSF seems to be so firmly planted on the board that I would hate to have to reseat or remove it!
 
OK I have come to the conclusion that work or not the intel retail box stock HSF is unreliable structurally - despite my best effort in reseating, the holding stunts/spikes were not wedged securely and evenly enough and i believe the tension that held the HSF in place would lax overtime as the plastic legs deforms. The fact I had been getting erratic temp reading really bothered me. I went out and purchased a EVercool screw-driven HSF and installed it with new Thermal Paste. The CPU ran at 55 C idle in the beginning. After several hours of use, the CPU temp has actually come down a bit to 52 C range. I rebooted and checked the idle temp at 51 C. I hope this is considered normal.....

Just to be sure.. when you initially took the retail HSF out of the box and installed it.. you didn't turn the pegs at all, right? Straight out of the box, no turning of anything should be done. You turn the pins only when removing the HSF.
 
Yes I just pushed down the pegs when I installed the original the Intel HSF. However I did reseat it several times in my attempt to lower the CPU temp. May be the HSF is not designed to handle multiple reseating. DO you think low 50s C is acceptable?May be the extra L2 cache circuity and the higher clock rate still overshadow the 65nm technology improvement....???

Before reapplying the HSF you turned the pegs back to their original position, right? I've always found it more helpful to install the HSF before mounting the motherboard in the case.
 
yes, counterclockwise for removal, then clockwise before reseating!Well now I have a stock HSF in my hand with no processor to go with, any suggestion??? LOL🙂))

I used the Celeron D 356 setup to Partition a new Drive and installed Win XP Pro on it. Afterwards I rebooted and got a CPU Temp reading of 57 C from Bios.
This is quite frustrating indeed......Why is this thing running so hot?
