Celeron D 340 Help

Hi, I was just wondering about the Celeron D 340 and it's potentials. I have one sitting in my eMachines but I'm thinking about switching my mom's mobo (ECS but at least it has an AGP slot ) just for fun. I was just wondering if anyone has this chip or knows anyone that does and can you please inform me on how this chip performs and overclocks?

Btw, is it possible to get 166fsb on this sucker, making it run at 3.65 ?
 
Yes, 3.65GHz is possible on a Deleron. BITD I had a 320 (2.4GHz) running at 3.6GHz with a Thermalright XP120 and Panaflo 120mm fan.

I think generally speaking, don't waste too much time or effort on these. Wasting a bit is okay, but too much... may as well just get something better. If you are wanting more gaming power, upgrade your video card. Smoother operation in Windows? Upgrade your RAM and remove startup items.

At 3.65GHz you'd have some well cooked power with that Prescott core. 😛
 
😀 I actually got this cpu along with the other eMachines stuff from BF for 150$ 🙂. This is actually supposed to be my mom's computer but she's using a P4 2.4C with an ECS mobo (but has an AGP slot), so I'm swapping it out since she doesn't play CS or anything... xP
 
A whole computer for $150 with that CPU? We'll forgive you for getting a Deleron. :laugh:

Just get good cooling and it should do fine.
 
And a 17" monitor as well 😀. I'm going to stick with the stock cooler fom the eMachines 🙂Q) for now, since it's so quiet and won't be a huge disturbance to my roommate.
 
Maybe just part it out on eBay and use the resulting $300 to build a nicer machine?
 
That sounds like a great idea too 🙂. I'm thinking about waiting until the next gen cards to come out before I make a move.

Wow... the computer goes for $350~ all the way up to high $400's... I'm impressed.

 
Is that the going price on eBay for the whole system? If so and you only paid $150 for it... sell it and put the money towards a budget Sempron system with PCIe.
 
Yah, for the whole system (not including shipping). I'm going to post er up on eBay, and then sell some other crap laying around, and go with your advice 🙂. Btw, my local Fry's is having a sale on the 3100+ with ECS Nforce 3 Mobo for 89.99. Should I bite?
 
That ECS combo is a maybe. First, the board is an Nforce3 with AGP so if you wanted to go with PCIe you will have to eBay the board - no sweat since it's basically free with the CPU. The board is useable and overclockable to the BIOS max of 250MHz, plus higher with clockgen (reports of up to 270-280MHz). It allows for voltage even on non-C&Q CPUs, which my Chaintech VNF3 doesn't. Overall a nice low-end combo for a nice price... one thing though is that I bought one (while visiting relatives in San Diego) and the one I got was the original 130nm core. I know of about 2-3 other people who got this older core, but one person claimed he got a 64 bit CPU which is one of the newer cores for sure. Basically YMMV. 64 bit aside, the newer 90nm cores will run cooler and OC higher plus have C&Q while the old 130nm core does not. The older core is a match for the motherboard since with a 250MHz BIOS ceiling the CPU will be at 2250MHz which is about what mine would do (one that I had before, the new one was returned untested). The newer core CPUs will likely clock higher, but will need a better motherboard to do that on.

They are selling the 90nm core, but what I'm worried about is that if I buy such a good cpu (good in my standards, as many will disagree with this statement), and a nice mobo, I'll have to make sure that the rest of my system is running in harmony. This means that a surveyor would see a nice 7800GT, along with some massive capacity HD's in raid 0, with 2 gigs of high performance memory through the plastic window in my 200$ case 😀. In all honesty, I think I would spend more than I want, so I think I'm going to have to refrain from such a high end cpu. I'm thinking about just running a duron with a 9600 pro/xt to suit my gaming needs, and possibly rolling around to upgrading IF there is any money left that hasn't gone into the car. :Q
 
That doesn't make sense regarding "too good" CPU. The board is AGP so you won't be upgrading it to a 7800GT anyways.
 
I know, but I might be tempted to make the jump to PCI-E. Dang it, so many hard decisions. Well, one thing for sure, I won't be using an eMachines for that much longer...
