Celeron 400A on Asus P3V4X?

I have a Slot 1 Celeron that needs a new motherboard. I was hoping to use a P3V4X to provide a compatible path for hand-me-down upgrades from another computer that also uses a P3V4X.

So, today I tried my slot 1 Celeron 400A in my P3V4X. It runs fine at 400, but it won't overclock. It failed to POST at 75 MHz three out of four times. It did POST at 75 once. Upping the core voltage to 2.1 did not help. I think cooling is not the issue because the CPU was cold when I first tried it, and it failed then.

This seems like pretty poor performance for a Celeron 400. I thought they were almost guaranteed to run at 75 MHz and most of them ran at 83. Is there any other setting on the motherboard that could be causing these bad results? Would another motherboard be better? Or do you think my CPU is just a dog?

I have PC-133 memory, and a 550E runs fine at 770 (140 MHz) on this mobo.

Sounds like a doggy chip. I can get a 300A up to 517 on my P3V4X, among other things.

The most I was able to get out of my old Celeron 400 was 450 (on a p3V4X), it would not even do that on my tyan board. The Celeron 400's are not known for their clockability. the 300's, 333's, 433's, and 466's, all seem to be much better clockers. The new celermines are in a league of their own. I think you still should go with the P3V4X. Though you may not be able to O'clock the celeron 400, when you 'hand down' the cpu from you other system when that gets upgraded in the future, you'll be glad you did. You can also do what I did -- sell the celeron 400 & pick up a lower end coppermine (or one of the new celermines).
