Thanks for the link GregANDTCH.

I and a fellow tech friend have noted that, if there's ANYTHING that fails on an eMachine, it's the power supply.

But typically they're good machines. Solid case, TriGen boards are fairly durable, good components.... just the power supplies suck ass and should be EXPECTED to be replaced....

Notice they're refurbished? Maybe they already replaced the power supply!! :Q

<edit> Oops! I just noticed that they're NOT refurbished, but simply open box. </edit>

Hey... at $139, YOU CAN'T GO WRONG. This IS a hot deal! :D

adamone11: You're right. ATI Rage's are actually pretty damn good for gaming even! As for hardware decoding... they do have it! You HAVE TO use the ATI DVD Player, though. And of course, DMA needs to be enabled for that drive.

I don't care how sweet the deal is . . . STAY AWAY FROM E-MACHINES!!! Low quality parts (especially the power supply, as somebody has pointed out above). You'll regret it later. My 2 cents.

What's poor quality? The Samsung CDROM? The WD Hard Drive? the Mitsumi Floppy? Oh.. Must be the Intel processor. Yeah. Those suck.

Like I said, I'm a tech that's had to work on these and other than the power supply, I'd take one of these for $139 if I needed one. There's nothing wrong with any of the parts and TriGem's motherboard quality control is head and shoulders above Abit or PC Chips.

Too bad I just bought a Gateway 6400 Server. ;)

Above PC Chips... YES! PC Chips is the sewage pit of the motherboard realm.

Above Abit...... No way.

I've ordered mine and it already shipped...I should have it on Monday. :)

My question is...do you think this machine will run Windows 2000? I'm assuming the modem may not work and I'll need more memory, but what about overall....any problems? I'm just going to use it as a test machine, so the hard drive size as is should not be a problem.

Also, indeed, eMachines power supplys SUCK. Period. So, if I buy a replacement one, is it going to suck too? I mean, does only one place manufacture the power supply?

It offers hardware assisted decoding for MPEG2 only. Same goes for pretty much anything else out there that gives hardware decoding.

The Radeon gives even better decoding but the Rage Pro definitely does it too. It should let a 266Mhz P2 decode DVDs just fine, which is better than most software solutions.

Why buy a Toyota when you can buy a Porsche? Well, some people can't afford or need the horsepower of a Porsche.
Great deal, if you can find the same configuration for less, already built, post it. Who cares what you can do for a few hundred dollars more? Isn't that an ifinite argument? If you spend just a few hundred more you can get this, and instead of this if you spend a few more dollars you can get this. Blah, blah, blah. About the only thing I agree with is buying a little more RAM, which is as cheap as dirt anyways.

I'm going to get another beer.

I'm in! This will be perfect for my husband to play his games on. The games he plays are just basic anyway, solitaire and such. Thanks to the OP for the deal.

Oh hell no!

The PC Power and Cooling model is WAY better than the freaky one that comes with the PC. Delta also makes a good P/S for those machines for even less money. What repair shops typically use is the Delta, but there's a down side to Deltas: The fans wear out and become noisy quickly. :(

What are people putting in these things as far as RAM? I was thinking about a stick of Crucial 128mb Cas2.

I've heard about the E Machines PSU reliability problems. I wondered why Directron had these.

Seems a little expensive for a POS replacement PSU ($39). Wouldn't it be as cheap to swap out the case and PSU for something like this one for $35?

If the PSU does fail on this under warrantee, won't E Machines replace the PSU anyway? If this thing worked for a year, I'd think that it was more than worth the $140 shipped that I got this thing for. Someone was even talking about the warrantee being extended to 2 years if you use a MC (which I did). This just seemed like too good of deal not to pass up IMO. Even if mom doesn't use it, I can use this thing somewhere.

Thanks again,

Sal

Idiot56209: Just saw your post. How much are the Delta PSU replacements going for?

I scored yesterday but I was not aware of the 10% off promotional code for paying by Master Card. I called CompGeeks trying to modify the payment method or simply cancel the order for me. But it was too late to do so as the order was already sent to the warehouse.

Today I received a email from CompGeeks said my order cannot be processed coz the billing and the shipping address are different on my order. The credit card company has no record of the shipping address. Wow, I told myself that's great! I replied the email and asked them to cancel my order. Then I placed a new order with my Master Card, taking the advantage of additional 10% off. :D

Salvador, I just ordered a stick of Crucial 128mb cl-2 for the machine. $28.04 for a stick of Crucial works for me. They did however charge me tax in CA so the total was $30.xx. They're still offering the free 2nd day UPS delivery. Make sure you use this link to get the 15% discount Crucial 15% off

Carmann:

Sorry to post this here, but you don't have your PM enabled.

PC100 or PC133 Crucial RAM?

Thanks again,

Sal

pc-100.

Go through the link and on the main page it will ask you to choose a manufacturer. Click emachine, then it will bring up a drop down list with model #'s. Click 366is and pick your ram. Don't register with them prior to ordering. It will take away your 15% discount and only give you 10%. You'll have the option to create an acct during the order process anyway.

Better hurry on this deal. I picked a couple of these up for my family and I have been checking their quantities and they are selling about 100 per day and they only have 60 left right now!

Even though it's overkill, can I use a stick of PC133 instead of PC100 in this machine? It says that it's a 168 pin DIMM SDRAM.

Thanks again,

Sal

Went on ahead and purchased one. Along with 4 fans and the PPro Overdrive. I usually purchase from CompGeeks about 2-3 times per year. They aren't bad.

I'll bet this baby runs Win2K without a hitch. Gonna take out the 32 MB DIMM and pop in 2 - 64s. Mess around with it for a week or so and sell it at work.

Good find fxsts! Rarely look at their systems. Normally I just get fans, motherboards and used SCSI CDROMs from CompGeeks.

I can run rither W2K, ME, or 98SE. Since it'd for the kids, I'm gonna put ME just so all these games/education stuff will run that I load on it for them.

I bought the Crucial PC 100 128mb for 28.00 today. Probably should have bought PC 133 just for upgrade purposes come to think about it. But al in all very happy with my future set up

BTW-Bought one of the Viewsonic VG-150's for $ 350.00 delivered after rebate.

Good Find..

help!
i notice that the machine has no OS, and that the drivers are only for win98 and me. presumably there are drivers for the components that would work with a win 95 system, for testing purposes?

another question: would you guys through a cdrw in this and if so, which cheap burn pruf? i've got an old cdrw but its a pcmcia that works with my laptop. guess i could just get a pcmcia card adaptor too. suggestions?

i'd like to buy one of these baby's;

The only thing that seems a little odd to me is that these machines are about 2 years old. So why sell them now?

Since they are not "refurbished," but "returned," maybe these machines are a result of eMachines old "ISP" program. This program stated that if you used the eMachine Network as an ISP (for ~$20 a month), at the end of every year term you could "upgrade" your machine for $99 and get their latest comparable model.

Maybe what we are buying are all of the returns as a result of people upgrading?

At any rate, I'm still expecting mine on Monday and hopefully I'll be very pleased. At that price, I'm not going to argue either way...as long as it works, is clean, and doesn't look like it was dragged to hell and back.
