Celeron 336J or 420

These are the two cheapest Intel Processors available in the market (in UK). I was wondering if someone has ever tinkered with any of those and could give me some advices as to which one to go for. I am not that much interested in overclocking and intend to use the bog standard HSF.
 
If the choice is between those two alone, it isn't even really a choice. The 420 is a better chip in every way. It's faster and cooler.. 'nuff said.

Do you have any comparison (benchmarks, reviews) to back this up?
 
The 420 is basically a Core 2 Duo CPU, missing one of the cores. IIRC it is "officially" the Conroe-L chip. If what you are running isn't multithreaded and you aren't hugely multitasking (having multiple word processor and web browser windows open doesn't count) then this chip will give you about as good performance as a real Core 2 Duo of around the same MHz (maybe a little less because of less cache).
 
In the UK, cheapest we can get for a dual core whatever is USD 82, which is more than twice what we pay for an entry level Celeron 420... Again, I am not looking for bruteforce...

Agree with your logic.

I have a Celeron 360 in a budget Compaq, paid $200 for the whole thing including Vista. Very capable CPU, just no where near the latest and greatest.

I'd venture to guess it's faster than the 336.. if for no other reason, it has 512K L2 cache and 800MHz FSB vs. 256K and 533MHz for the 336.
 
I do have to say, though, that unless you have literally *no* money, a Pentium Dual Core (E2xxx) would be a better choice even at twice the price because it will serve your needs longer than any single-core processor. Multi-core is the way the hardware and software winds are blowing these days.

But, then again, if you have no money you probably should be focused on getting more money, not adding to or building a computer. 🙂
