I just picked up the oem celeron 2.4 and via p4pb motherboard @ the palo alto fry's for $69. the motherboard looks pretty cool, it has usb 2 and firewire built in and seems pretty loaded. I went in there for the amd 2400 deal but they had it for $99 so I picked this up instead. This looks like a way better deal.

oh yeah, I also picked up the WD 200gig hard drive that comes with a ata card they had for $99 after rebate.

I don't know how good the motherboard is but I'm successfully running a Celeron 2.4 at 3.4 GHz with stock cooling and voltage. Don't be afraid to overclock that thing.

I have 3 via motherboard, very smooth, never crash; can be overclocked by via's software. And, very good price.

how does the celeron2.4ghz compare to amd's xp2400+?

oh, best bang for the buck is when fry's has the k7s5a pro/xp1800+ retail for $59 total. retail version= chip w/official amd heatsink.

xp1800+ takes up less voltage than it's higher rated cousins. so it was overclock better than the xp2400+

wished i knew that b4 i bought the xp2400+/k7s5a combo :(

What motherboard and ram are you using? After reading up on how easily people overclock these Celerons to over 3Ghz I tried with the combo I got from Fry's but so far the max I can get to is 2.6Ghz (via 108FSB) using retail Intel heatsink fan and 2 x 256 Kingston PC2100 value ram. Raised the CPU voltage all the way up to 1.725 and still didn't help. Overall the system at stock performs about the same as my AMD XP1800+ & KT266 Pro2-A rig which isn't astounding but still a pretty good deal for a backup computer in my opinion.

Cheap price for a combo, but I would stay away from celerons as they have horrible performance.

Overclocked Celerons have decent performance, especially for the price. If you can run these Celerons at 533MHz FSB with PC2700 memory, the performance will be close to a P4 2.53GHz overall. Some benchmarks are worse (games) and some are better (applications, especially with SSE since throughput depends on raw clock speed), but performance is still more than adaquate.

Did anybody get the I/O shield with their board? I know it's a pretty standard arrangement of ports, but I actually have a case that doesn't have the right shield... It's an Enlite 7237 that has the factory IO shield in it. It lacks the knockout for the LAN connector... boo....

the board does not come with an I/O shield

I'm using a Shuttle SB61G2 SFF system and 2 x 256MB Samsung PC3200. I can get it to run at higher speeds (up to a 150 MHz FSB) but it's not even close to stable, even with increased voltage. It's as if I hit a wall at 3.4 GHz. Oh well, I'm not complaining.

ah... then I guess the motherboard is the limiting factor perhaps. just the basic run of the mill mobo with not much overclocking capability =/ no wonder it's so cheap.
