Think about this. If much of the heat gathers at the top of the room, the lower half of the room will feel cooler and the home owner will run the heat more to make the lower half warmer. Equalizing the temps at all levels of the room lets you run the heat less.

And on low, a ceiling fan uses very little power.

i keep it blowing down year round

if you have it blowing up you will get a dark area above the fan from where dust is sticking to the ceiling

Then of course there's the very true point of -

A well designed HVAC shouldn't need ceiling fans at all. In some decors they are considered tacky.

do u change the setting on the fan, depending on which season it is?

I do, I have 11 1/2 foot ceilings (in every room of my 105 year old house), huge difference. if I only had 8ft. ceilings I'd have to figure out which way makes it the warmest. and yes if you set the fan to blow upward (some fans spin different dirctions, it depends on the pitch of the blades on which is clockwise) during the winter it will force the cool air upwards and in turn the warmer air downwards.
