Cedar Shoe Tree

Has anyone used one? How have they worked for you?

What should I look for when buying a cedar shoe tree?

Thanks

Do they work - yes

They help wick the mositure from your shoes and help them keep their shap.

I use them in my dress shoes.

Spend anywhere from $8-15 on a pair. I prefer the split toe than the solid toe. Follow the guidelines on sizing on the box and trhey should work fine.

Yep have many of them. Not the actual "tree" that holds a bunch of shoes, but pairs of them. They are the best thing you can do for your shoes - last longer, no odor, keep their shape, etc.

Any shoe worth keeping for a long time deserves a cedar shoe tree. I have 4, reserved for my nicest shoes/boots.

I have a bunch of them that say Nordstrom on them. I can say that they keep the shoe stretched and smelling like fresh cedar. 🙂

Yep. I was complaining to my pop one time about how my nice dress/work shoes didn't last very long and they would smell.

"you're not using cedar blocks, that's why. Use them and never wear the same shoes more than two days in a row...better if just one day."

Wise man that guy. Did that and my shoes are in MUCH better condition, look better, no odor, etc.

On the topic of shoe care, do you have any recommendation for products to care for the exterior?

My pop had an old school "shoe box". It was a wooden box with the top having a means of securing the shoe. Inside the box were stains/paste, a brush or two and rags. Take a rag and rub in the cleaner/stain with a rag, brush it, then shine with another clean rag and a light touch of stain.

Lost art I believe - shining your own shoes.

Google tells me it's a "shine box"

For exterior, I don't use shoe wax, I use shoe cream. Meltonian is the recommended brand. It helps keep the leather from drying out.

Agreed - Meltonian is great. Use cream's in a glass or plastic jar - not that hard wax in a can crap. Department stores sell this stuff but also your local shoe repair guy.

Buy yourself a real horsehair shine brush - use an old sock to apply the paste/cream - let dry from 3-5 minutes, and vigorosly buff with your brush.

Don't forget to shine the edges of your sole if you are wearing leather soled shoes.

Way to make your shoes last longer is never wearing the same pair 2-days in a row.

Anything is better than the smell of your sweaty feet. 😛

How do you guys fight back against the salt and slush during the winter (besides due diligence in avoiding it)?

LOL that brings back some memories. My parents had one of those too growing up. I thought it was the coolest, yet weirdest thing.

1 set of split-toe tree from Nordstrom for each pair of Allen Edmonds

you cant avoid the ice. if you dont wear shoes ... why buy them. if they need cleaning i clean them. for ~30$ you can also send AE shoes for re-conditioning

I use them for my golf shoes (the only shoes I care to keep in nice shape), and they were well worth the investment. Shoes don't stink, keep their shape etc.

Like someone else said, buy rubber covers. Some are really necessary as they provide grip/treads on the bottom. Otherwise the smooth leather bottom of dress shoes are like skis.

I didn't cover mine today but I just took a wet paper towel to them when I got to work to wipe the salt and slush off.
