Hah! they're super cool. I've been meaning to go to a live show, I never realized how good their records sound, but you have a point.

Ys by Joanna Newsom is a really recent example of great sound quality (and exceptional talent, give it a listen immediately if you haven't- its my favorite album of this decade). The entire thing is recorded in abbey road studios with Steve Albini recording (considered one of the greatest audio engineers, he's done Pixies, Nirvana, PJ harvey, Slint) Van *** Parks doing instrumentals, and Jim O'Rourke mixing (Sonic Youth, Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot)... I think that's an unbeatable level of production and it certainly shows.

I'm sure the ATOT hifi buffs will be able to give me some good suggestions in this area :)

You can get Pink Floyd on SACD.

I have the hybrid SACD/CD of Dark Side, but no SACD player :(

You can get an entry level DVD-A and SACD player for about $199 or less.

As someone already mentioned, the big box set of Queen is excellent.
And by the way, we listed to that along with the vinyl "We Will Rock You" on my dads 1971 Pioneer tube amplifier with matching oak speaker set.

CD's sound better.

I have a 24k gold master of Hotel California by the Eagles.

Excellent quality!

Here is some interesting insight into remastering.

The Eagles: Hotel California LISTEN
First of all, the tape wouldn't play because of the "sticky shed" syndrome. The binding and oxides gum up. Any tape made after about 1974 is prone to that. However, if you heat tapes up in a convection oven, the tape will play for a week or two. So we cooked Hotel California. I had to sign a disclaimer for Ampex saying it's not their fault if the tapes are accidentally destroyed. I thought, "Sheesh, why does it have to be Hotel California that needs cooking?"

The tapes came back and they played fine. Phew. Next, the sound itself: It's a long story, including getting a pair of the same small JBL monitors they mixed it with originally. This was the toughest job I've ever done, a real pain, but I think it turned out very well. Others do, too. The Eagles Greatest Hits had the same set of problems.

And to think I have some 8 tracks still, that I want to burn to CD!

I've been impressed with all of the MTV Unplugged albums I've heard (Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, Nirvana, et al.)
