CDs ripped to MP3s. Do you have your CDs "out" or in a closet somewhere?

I have my entire CD collection (372 CDs) ripped to 256 and 320KBs MP3s. That many CDs takes up a lot of shelf space, so my CDs are currently in a big storage box in the closet.

I've been thinking about taking them out and building some shelves or something for them. But then again, it's just that many more things to dust.

So, what's the deal with your CDs?

Rip them all to my HD. Transfer to HTPC. CD cases with cds included end up whereever I have room.

They're all ripped to alt preset standard MP3s and FLACs. I proudly display. Well not really proudly but I have nowhere else to put them so they sit on a shelf somewhere. The collection is up to about 150 or so.

Hopefully you don't keep that binder in your car, right? I've heard too many horror stories about that!!1

Speaking of CDs I need to somehow get my collection down in Texas (parent's house) back up to IN. Wonder how much it will cost to ship 400+ CDs.

Nope, it's in a compartment in my entertainment center at home.

After ripping all my CDs, I just placed them in my closet, hopefully to never be seen again.

99% of them are ripped to my hard drive... I have a rack with 200 CD's on it in the living room. these are the CD's that I listen to on occasion (in my car, alarm clock, or at work). the rest of my CD's (maybe another 200 or so... I've never counted) are in a box in a closet.

I ripped my thousands of CDs in a laborious process that lasted months. Now they're in boxes for safekeeping.

FWIW, burn copies of them and keep those in the car. If the copies get stolen, who cares.

Exactly what I do. After having my car broken into once and losing a few cds, I keep nothing but copies in there now.

my parents car got broken into a couple years ago and all the CD's were stolen... the theives realized what crappy CD's my parents had by the time they reached the end of the block, and just dumped them on the corner :D

solution to theft = bad taste ;)

Mine co-exist together in a 400 CD Sony mega changer. I have had it since before the mp3 craze. All my cases are in a big box somewhere.

Probably about 60% of them are ripped, but the cases are in a big box in the basement and the CDs are in binders next to my living room PC, on one of the bottom shelves of my entertainment center. I'm ripping more of them as we speak, since my 200GB from FS/FT showed up this weekend :)
And we've got an mp3/CD deck in the car, so I really only need a few CDs in there @ about 150 songs each.

I have all my CDs ripped to 5.00 Quality Ogg Vorbis. It's almost 10 gigs, even then.

my cd collection is pretty small.. probably 40-50 CD's maybe. I tend to listen to the same stuff over and over :) That and a small chunck of songs are just singles from an album.. whole album isn't worth purchasing unless under $3.

I have all my cds ripped to 256 kbps mp3 (about 100 cds, 10gb). I have them proudly displayed on a cd rack in my room. That's like $1500 worth of cds, no way I'm NOT gonna show it off.

They're just sitting in a case. I guess it would be cool to get a big wall display panel for them, though...

Kinda my thinking too. My collection started in...crap....1990...or some year like that!

I'd like to build like a 20-foot long shelf and display them all end-to-end. That'd be cool. :)

This thread reminded me of the daunting task of ripping all of my ~150 CDs.
