Around here we have a large Hispanic population (Waukegan, IL). Today I was stuck behind one of our Latino brethren who was doing all of 41-42mph in a 50mph zone/one land road during work commute hours. When I finally was able to get around him I noticed that he had a CD hanging from his rearview mirror. I've noticed this a lot, and always with Hispanic people. Can anyone enlighten me on what this means? Does he like the CD? Letting the world know he is successful and owns a CD player? Likes the shiney/dull label contrast as the CD moves around when he drives over a bumpy road? Maybe he just likes round discs with holes in the middle? I guess I just don't understand the whole CD hanging from a rearview mirror thing. I don't remember ever seeing a cassette tape hanging from a rearview mirror back in the 80's. Maybe I should hang my Lord of the Rings DVD from my mailbox.

It's 2 degrees out. Windows were not going down. Not to mention many of the Latino population in this area is "no inglés". Not worth the gamble of getting cold.
They're fishing for a cop that will pull them over for "object obstructing vision" so they can cry discrimination.

It was popular for everyone to do it back here in the early 90's. Mainly because that's when CD players were really becoming available for cars and hanging that was like a sign saying "Look at me, I'm cool and you're not.".
To me it was also considered an advertisment to theives "Hey, rob me, I've got a CD player and not some crappy tape deck!". That's why I never bought into that fad.
I still see it every now and then, and usually it's with a Mexican or a redneck in a b1tchin' Camaro.

Most of the times I've seen them with the flag of their country of origin painted on one side.
I've only seen the P.R. flag and the Jamaican flag though.

Yes, my niece got pulled over for having a lai(sp) hanging. And my mom got pulled over for her handicapped parking permit (PERMANENT).
they both got verbal warnings. both in IL
EDIT:
i understand the lai(sp). but the officer stated "obstruction of vision" on both occasions

People here make fun or stereotype hispanics because they fit 100 people in a pickup truck, always sit outside their apartments on the steps drinking beer, have cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents living in the same house with them, stare and whistle at chicks that walk by blindly, etc.
Once you go to a hispanic country you will see that all they are doing is bringing what they are use to in their home land over to their new home. Nothing is wrong with that. In their countries, having a CD player in a car is not the norm, so yes, hanging a CD from their rear view mirror is something they may do to show some wealth, so maybe they are doing that here too.
