ok let me get this strait. something doesn't work. you ask the manufacturer for a solution, which he gives. but you think the solution isn't practical?

wait let me think about this again...

i think i still don't get it....

no, sorry i don't get it.... i would just do what the manufacturer told me to, cause they should know what to do... (it's not dell😛)

ok, i see....so let's start.
what mobo, what controller, how many hdd's, which ide connectors, which version of windows, which ide drivers, tried safe mode boot up?
exchanged anything or just installed the drive on a new ide cable in ide port 2?

EDIT if on 2k or xp, tried repair install?
EDIT 2 which bios-version?
EDIT 3 irq problems?
EDIT are all ide cables plugged in strong enough and pin-correct?

what i've read error cod 10 means that win xp can't initialise the drive.

ok this is really a wild guess: is there any clippy or jumper or anything else that should be removed before the drive is installed? should be in the manual. sometimes they put something on it to make shure i survives shipping without problems.

irq-stuff: go into your ontrol panel, system, hardware devices, then the +on cdroms (or something like that(, click on the lite on, go into the propeties and look if there is any conflict.

cable stuff: is the drive alone on a controller or is there also an other drive or hdd?

bios/drivers: maybe a driver-update for your motherboard helps. (that's why your system specs would be quite usefull (amd or intel, which motherboard?) or a bios update.

before you rma it you might unplug it and boot w/o it then plug it back in and boot. might run a reg cleaner before plugging it back in. is it set master or slave or cable select? a bad cable?😕

very simply if you can put any ide device on the same channel, on the same plug and have it work, regardless of what it is, then move the object in question to the same plug on the same channel and have it NOT work, its not the channel OR the cable, its a bad device, RMA the flippin thing =)
