CDRW drive installation problems

Hello. I need some help. I just got a new ECA motherboard with 512 mb of ram and AMD Sempron 64 bit processor. I used a IDE to laptop drive converter to install my laptop harddrive which already contains windows 2000 on it. So I piece everything togethehr and setup bios to boot cdrom first and then harddisk . OK, so the win 2k that was on there boots and win2k's my computer sees the harddive and assignds it a letter. Unfortunayttyely, no matter what cd i put into it it says the drive is empty. Also, when I put the win 2k installation disk into the cd drive and set cdrom drive to master on main ide and remove hardd drive and set uup bios to bookt from cd rom, it says boot failure. I would expect it to show me the win 2k installation (even though no hard drive attached). It doesnt work with the hard drive connected also. What is wrong here?

Help please.
