CDRW Drive "blinking", NOT responding --- HELP

I have an ATAPI CD ROM drive and an NEC CDRW drive on my ABIT KT7 mobo, running on an AMD 750 cpu...everything was working fine for about a year, and now suddenly a couple weeks after installing a clean version of Win XP...my ATAPI drive fails completely and just now my CDRW drive isn't even detected, the light just blinks on/off constantly...what can I do? and what would cause this??

you could try this:
run regedit
Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
then reboot
