CDRW and DVDROM Question **UPDATE: Now with Pic**

Ok I have my CDRW and DVD drive on the same IDE channel and I didn't have any problem until I started using Windows 2000. With WinME I didn't have these problems.
My DVD drive is a creative 12x and the cdrw is a Plextor 12/10/32a
the dvd drive is master and the plextor is slave.

anyway when I try to copy a cd in Windows 2000 I can not copy at 12x with out going to the hard drive first then to cd. although at 8x it works fine. Also the drives show up backwards in Adaptec CD Copier. My DVD shows up as drive F: when it should be E: and the Plextor shows up as E: when it should be F:

I have a 30 gig maxtor UDMA 66 hard drive hooked up to my computer as well.

My IDE drives are as follows.

Primary IDE (ATA 66) - Maxtor 30 gig (Master) - None (Slave)
Secondary IDE (ATA 33) - Creative DVD (Master) - Plextor (Slave)

Also as far as I can tell the Plextor is not in DMA mode at all. I still need to put the jumper on the drive so that it will be in DMA mode. I have made sure all the settings are right in device manager.

On my ASUS K7V I only have 2 IDE channels as stated above. I was wondering if my setup is ok or should I try something different? and if so what is the best way to use these drives in my computer.

I have tryed to hook one of the drives up as a Slave to the hard disk but the cable will not reach in my full tower 🙁

If you need the rest of my sytem specs it is listed as Blayze's Athlon in my System Rigs page in my sig.

Thanks for your help,

Blayze 🙂

<< I still need to put the jumper on the drive so that it will be in DMA mode. >>

I seem to recall that the author of that jumper "fix" found that it caused problems copying data & resorted to removing the jumper in order to get the drive to work properly!

ok then how would you get the Plextor 12/10/32a drive to work in DMA mode?
on my system it says that its using PIO mode even though I have it set to use DMA if available.

Enable DMA in Control Panel --> System --> Device Manager

I would leave your hard drive alone on the primary IDE; it shouldn't really matter whether your DVD-ROM or burner is master on your secondary IDE, of course make certain that the other has its jumper set to slave.

DMA is enabled but it says still in PIO Mode.

Just don't understand why it would burn fine in Windows ME and then I have problems in 2000.

oh well...anything else I could try?

If this is your athlon try the newest via drivers, not from the cd , heard of problems with these, It will ask you about DMA etc.

ok I'll try that

last time I loaded up the VIA drivers it made all my drives SCSI and my DVD player wouldn't work

does anyone know why my Plextor will not burn in 12x/why the drive letters are reversed in cd copier?

Ive heard of this happening to people but not me since i got the MSI board.

I would use the burner as a master because i have had this problem before.

alright thanks for the help

I was just looking though the manual for the Plextor drive and it said to use it as a master and the cdrom/dvd as slave as well.

I will try this out and try the newest 4 in 1 drivers.

I remember hearing other people having the same problem with the dvd/everything showing up scsi before with the 4 in 1 drivers. I think all you do is not to install some driver. Not sure which though 🙂

another thing does it matter where the master and slave drives are located on the IDE cable?

I know on the ATA 66/100 cables you have to connect them a certain way.

ok thats what I thought but looking at my system now I have it plugged in the other way.

the master is at the end of the chain and the slave is in the middle.

should this matter?

Put the jumper on the back of the Plextor (I have had it on for a couple of months and never had a problem), it's the only way to get DMA in win2K, as it recognizes the drive's transfer mode set in the BIOS.

Then try them on separate IDE channels, DVD on primary slave and burner on secondary master. You'll get much better performance burning directly from the DVD this way.

BTW, I think the problem some people reported was only with Adaptec EasyCD creator. Try Nero if you don't have it, it's so much better.

To answer your question, I have a K7V, and my master drives are on the end of the IDE cables. (but I don't think it matters...)

will putting my DVD drive as primary slave to the hard drive effect the transfer speeds on the hard drive? (UDMA 66)

where does the jumper go?
I am looking at the manual now and the only place it looks like it would go is to the left of the digital audio connector
it looks like two pins and it says not used in the book

is this the jumper?

Your Hard drive will still run @ATA-66.

The jumper is on the left of the drive. It's normal for the manual to say not used because not even Plextor admit this. I thought it was a joke when I first heard about it, but I tried it and it's been working flawlessly ever since.(dma mode2 instead of pio-4)

thanks I will give this a try.

I am thinking that this is why I can only burn at 8x. for 12x I currently have to copy to the hard drive first.

if my cables will reach I am going to hook the DVD up as a slave to the hard drive. if they do not reach I will still put the plextor as a master and the dvd as a slave.

thanks for all your help. now its time to get to work 😉

Blayze,

A few things:
My Suggested IDE config...
Primary IDE: Master- Plex CDRW, Slave- None
Secondary IDE: Master- Maxtor HD, Slave- DVD

- Your ASPI Layers set correctly?
http://www.cyrus.troy.btinternet.co.uk/yaa2.htm

- Make sure you've got Firmware 1.07 on your Plex
- ABSOLUTELY do NOT use VIA Busmaster Drivers! (There's a KNOWN issue with it not working with new CDRW drives). Stay with Win2k drivers.
- I've got the TDK (Same Drive), I too get the PIO/Mode 2 instead of DMA. Don't think there's much we can do for that, for now anyway.
- Don't expect too much out of DAE, the drive is supposed to be able to do 32x DAE. Realistically for me, I get around 24x.

Good luck!

ok its up and running in udma mode now!
only problem is I still can't copy over 8x on the fly 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁

it says my dvd drive isn't fast enough. now why would it be fast enough in ME and not 2000?
strange.

well I have been wanting a Plextor 40x scsi drive anyway maybe this is the excuse I need to get one

Blayze -You're lucky 2 copy at 8X, I have a 12X DVD-ROM & the best I can copy
at is 4X...With UDMA66/100 IDE cable you *must* plug blue connector into MB, otherwise it does not matter with the rest of them.

Saw your DMA.jpg, after installing jumper on Plex CDRW(drive 1) does the Current Transfer mode now read "Ultra DMA Mode" also?
