Cdrom reading problem *see inside*

Got a 8X cdrom drive that reads disc sometimes and sometimes it dont. Would a disk that cleans cd drives fix my problem or could it be a more serious problem?
 
I used to have the same problem with an old 2x Matsushita. What worked for me was to clean the lens over the laser (gently) with a cotton swab doped with white vinegar,fantastic, ammonia or alcohol. Had to do it @ every 6 mos. Then it crapped out completely. I don't know for sure but I surmised that the laser was getting weaker and that any "film" or dust made it totally useless.
