CDROM problems ... help

I have been having CDROM problems ever since I built my new computer system. I have my one and only hard drive set as the primary master. I have a 50X Asus CDROM as the secondary master and an Acer 6206A burner as the secondary slave. The problem I am having is the 50X CDROM will freeze up consistently when I am trying to load a program or listening to a music CD. I initially bought a Samsung 52X drive and took two of them back to the dealer because of freeze up problems. Today he gave me the Asus and it is still doing the same thing.... obviously it is not the CDROM drive thats the problem. There are no apparent conflicts in either drive when I check the device manager. I am wondering if I should change the configurations of the drives themselves. The Acer people recommend that the two CDs should be configured as I have them. What else could be the problem?? Could the cable be faulty? I am at a loss to determine why this is happening.

Try switching the CDROM drives and seeing what happens. I kind of prefer to have the CDRW drives on master anyway

Thanks DJ ... I spoke to a computer tech we have at work here and he suggested I try the cable select setting on both drives.... apparently the newer drives prefer CS. I am at work now but will give it a try when I get home. In my old system I had two hard drives, one as primary master and the other as secondary master. The CDROM was primary slave and the burner was secondary slave. Everything worked fine with that config but I was using a different mobo etc.
