CDROM icon not in "My Computer"

I put a new HDD in a Dell Latitude CPi, then installed 98SE after formatting. When I try to install applications I can hear the cd spinning, but the setup wizard does not appear, and when I go to My Computer to open it from the CDROM icon, it ain't there. I installed a CDROM driver from Dell and that didn't make any difference. Anyway, the Windows installation went okay, with the setup wizard appearing on its own when I put it in the cd drive, so I assumed that the cdrom driver was okay to begin with. In Settings tab for the CDROM in Device Manager, the only check is in "Auto insert notification", with all others greyed out. In the "Current drive letter assignment" box there is only grey, so I think something needs a little work here. Anybody know the steps? Thanks

CDROM jumper pins are set to Master/Slave/CS correctly, and devices are arranged on the IDE cable correctly??

Yes, I assume so, since nothing was changed since it worked before.

So, just to clarify, you were able to install Windows from the CD-ROM but after that it no longer works?

Check your device manager. Are there any exclamation points?

One possible solution

If you installed any driver updates involving "Intel IDE controller" or similar, get rid of them. Also try deleting the CD-ROM drive and IDE controllers from Device Manager and rebooting.

Thank you very much for suggesting to go to Device Mgr and delete the cdrom. That did the trick. But, like everthing else with computers, it was wierd because when I rebooted there was a different cdrom listed in Device Mgr. Before there was only one, a different one from what is there now. And it did not "detect new hardare" on reboot. I checked My Computer and the cdrom icon is there, and I put in a cd and the setup wizard came on. Before the fix I checked in System Information and there was a message in the conflicts section that said, "Secondary IDE controller has been disabled in the hardware." And now it's all happy everywhere in System Information that the secondary IDE controller is mentioned. BTW, there were no red exclamation points in Device Mgr, but there were some flying around the room awhile ago. I think that it was Dostoevsky that said that computers are like the world....War and Peace. Thanks
