:confused:I have a machine with winxp a 1.6ghz duron with 384 ram with a 32x24x48 aopen cdrw as the master and a benq 52x cdrom as the slave. The hardrdrive is a wd 120gig as the master. When I try to play a cdr in the benq the harddrive lite starts flashing and the music picks up the beat and sounds horrible. I put the cdr in the aopen and it plays perfect. I have replaced the benq with other cdroms with the same effect. Also I have replaced the cable. If I try to play mp3's or wma files in the benq it plays perfect. Any ideas? This only started when I had a new clean install of winxp from win98se.

Device Properties turn off digital audio playback for that device?

Device Manager -> CDROM's Properties -> Properties Tab -> Uncheck the digital audio option

If that fixes it, you can look for updated chipset drivers, or tweaks for IDE performance to correct it.

I have the digital playback option for both drives turned off. The drive is hooked to the soundcard via the 4 wire plug.

Does your sound card have two inputs? Switch the cables (audio) from the two CDROMs and see if perhaps one of them is picking up noise?

Double check your master slave settings, try and put both CDROMs on the same IDE channel if possible.

That's pretty odd though...

Been there and done that. I have even switched the two drives from master to slave and visa versa. I'm at a loss.
