CDR media Speed Question

I recently purchased a HP 9350i 10x4x32x burner. I need to get some media, but I don't see 10x CDR media. Can I just purchase 12x media and will that burn at 10x speed?? Most 12x media says they support 1x to 12x speeds, and lists 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, and 12x...no 10x!!! I would like to know from experience or opinion so i know the right kind of media to purchase. Thanks.

The 12X will work fine. That is the maximum rated transfer speed, so at 10X they will work in your CD-RW. When they say 80min, 700mb, they are squeezing in the extra space between the inner and outer edges, and your CD-R and Software may or may not support the extra space. No fear, it will work the same as the 650mb-74min discs.

So the CDR disc it self does not do an incremental step in speed? ie only 2x, 4x, 8x, or 12x as some cdr's suggest. They could, in theory, do 9x or 8.5x or something like that then?? I'm just curious as to how they rate this CDR's and how the speed limitation comes into play.

Not only in theory, they do in fact. They could just call it by the max speed, like 12X, but that would scare off all the peeps with slower drives, or confuse the heck out of them if they aren't technically savvy. It's like a speed limit - you can go slower and be fine, but any faster and you are busted!
