This CDR Media from AccessMicro seems a good deal, if it's any good. It says grade A, so I dunno, has anyone else had experience with this (non)brand?

All that "Grade A" crud is double talkin BS!

Without actually having one of those CDRs to use CDR Identifier on, it's anybody's guess what quality those things are.

Damn, those are cheap CDRs. If anyone finds out the maker let us know.. I'll take a chance and order a small spindle to report my findings if no one else does...
Still have 100 CDRS from that Fry's deal a few weeks back. ;)

Very strange pricing on these. 50 is the best deal, after that, the more you buy the more they cost you per CD.

Stupid shipping costs don't help any. That's the only reason why I hate AccessMicro.. $15 to ship 2 spindles? Hah.

Haha! That's a funny statement, do you have ANY proof? That's like saying buy PC133 chips now cause new shipments of the faster ones is coming.

Give me a break, you want to know what those 16x certified CDRs are? They're REPACKAGED 12x CDRs that say 16x certified. And 12x Certifieds were last years 8x certifieds and so on. And what PROOF do I have to that?

CDR Identifier and cdmediaworld.com...I have an old (we're talking from 4 years ago) spindle of CDRs, CDR Ident says they're Cyanine; Type 0 (back then they were certified 4x). I also have some current ones that are 10x certified, guess what? They're Cyanine Type 0...Same OEM.

It's the same technology, it's the same media. The only difference is it's been tested with the newer technology.

Agree.

I have some "crappy" 4x media, both gold and blue. Both can burn at 12x on the burner at my work.

You can't certify media for drives that don't exist yet. Well, I suppose you could get access to that NASA 24x burner I've read about...then you could make 24x certified media....but let's keep it real.

UPDATE:

I just got my 50-pack (err actually 2x 25-packs) and here is the ID:

ATIP: 97m 16s 36f
Disc Manufacturer: Grand Advance Technology Ltd.
Assumed Dye type: Phthalocyanine (Type 6)
Media type: CD-Recordable
Recording Speeds: min. unknown - max. unknown
nominal Capacity: 702.83MB (79m 59s 74f / LBA: 359849)

Not too shabby for the price.. if you buy a truckload you'll compensate for the shipping costs, they all average out to about 20-25 cents apiece shipped.

I tend to like PC dye. Just an observation over time that's all.

However, this does not qualify Grand Advance Media or whatever that company is - as being a decent manufacturer. In fact, it makes me very suspicious. Normally, cdr factories that you've never heard of are usually Taiwanese ... and that can be problematic at best in terms of quality.

But the bottom line is this:

Do they burn well with your particular setup? Are the discs reliable in terms of burning success and in terms of holding the critical information? Are they readable in readers of consequence? If you are making discs for friends do they have problems reading those cdrs? Did you get them for cheap?

If you answer postively to any/all of these questions then go for it.

does cd-r media really make that much of a difference? My opinion is that the cd burners are more of an indicator of the quality of the end burn.....I've had many bad burners and hence many bad discs....but then I used the same discs in my new plextor burner...and things work so much better.

samjlee,

Quality media makes a huge differace. I too have a Plexwritter, but I started using crappy media when I first got the thing. Now the songs I've burned sound like crap, and some of the data I have burned is no longer readable. Do yourself a favor in the long run and buy some good media. I like Fuji Film's Taiyo Yuden.

Samjlee, media does make a difference - like anything in life. There is no doubt about it.

Sounds like you've never had a problem. Good for you. I hope you never encounter a problem with cdrs. But many people have encountered problems and it's not because of their hardware/software setups.

What has gotten people on this board spoiled is the availability of deals on great products like Plextor burners and decent media along with software like Nero. Burning with setups like these allow for a very low rate of error and for very good burns with almost all kinds of media.

However, where crap media problems manifest themselves are in certain areas. Not in the ability to play in your own readers but the ability to play in most/all readers AND the ability to hold critical data. I sound like a broken record because this is my mantra.

I've had experiences with Ritek made Maxells and CMC Magnetics made Verbatims either not being readable in friends readers or failing to hold critical info even just after 3 months. Heck, the Maxells could not even be read after 3 mos at all!

If you've never had these experiences then you are lucky. But somewhere down the line it will happen to you and you will be pissed off.

The real bottom line is this: With deals like the TDK and FujiFilm Taiyo Yuden made discs with rebates/coupons floating around there is absolutely no reason whatsoever why people shouldn't be using quality discs. If you pick up cheap crap then caveat emptor!
