I hope this isn't too far off topic but I have a small decision to make that I help some of you more seasoned vets can help with. I just bought a HP9510I CDRW on a raincheck from OM for $99.00 and I already have a Smart and Friendly SAF 8020 SCSI that I have been very happy with for a year or so. My problem is: which should I keep? I didn't really want to hook the HP up to test if I get some negative input from you guys as I have been served well by my SAF, but if you guys think that the HP is a better burner I will probably sell my 8X20 Scsi and go for the 12x IDE HP. I am not really concerned too much about speed only quality, and I have had the SAF for about a year and have burned 300-400 discs with maybe 3-5 bad burns using nero as my software,,,,I guess my point is this a smart upgrade for me? Is my 8x20 past it's prime? I would have to get an IDE card to set the HP up the way I want but have no problems with that. Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I have that s&f drive and i really like it. i would always advise scsi over ide, but with burn proof that is going away. others may disagree, but if you want an ide burner get a plextor and plextor only. most fantastic drives i have ever seen. i have an 8x scsi too that i love. the only thing is the 16x plextor is ide and from what i have read there are no plans for a scsi version. keep the scsi. you will be glad you did. it could be luck, but in my 4 years of burning cd's i have never had a buffer underrun w/ a scsi burner. (of course now i will tonight 🙂 )
just my 2 cents

It depends. Being SCSI allows you to burn and forget. Going IDE you have to be a bit more careful depending on your comp resources. Anyways, for general burning i'd take the HP. It's a decent burner and faster too.

However, if you are into burning "backup" copies of games and such then you may want to do more research about your S&F as the new SafeDisc2 protection has hit the stores and most current burners have problems "backing up" this new protection with CloneCd. Search the forums for the CloneCd threads and find the link to a webpage that has a list of burners that will do true "backup" copies of SafeDisc2 transferable to any other drive.

Additionally, Phillips-based hardware burners have NO problems with SafeDisc2 as opposed to recent models of popular burners like Plextor, Sony and the like. Furthermore, I understand that the Plextor 8/20 and some of the older models can do SD2 totally but not the new models due possibly to their firmware. Check what your S&F hardware is based on.

Hope this helps.
