CDR/DVD Drive on the fritz

Hello. I'm using a Toshiba Satellite 1415-S115 laptop computer, and today my internal cdr/dvd drive (a matshita UJDA 730) went out. my device manager says that the device is working properly, but it stalls on any cd/cdr/dvd that i put in the drive. I cant even hear the drive whirring as it starts up. Is there anything that I can do other than taking it to COMPUSA to get looked at? I've tried updating my BIOS, and have run troubleshooter about five times. I cant even update my drivers because it refuses to read the recovery disks. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks

I would suggest NOT bringing it to a retail shop to be looked at unless if you have it under warranty still through them. Otherwise they will charge you an arm and a leg for service.

If you don't have any more warranty, I suggest pulling out the cd drive on your own and maybe find a replacement on EBay or something. In the end, it'll cost a LOT less than going to a retail shop.

Keep in mind that taking apart laptops is kinda tricky. Don't lose the screws. 😉

Hello again,

I just tried something kind of strange. I put a DVD in my drive upside down, and my player worked normally, whirring and everything except it couldnt read anything. But when i put the DVD in rightside up, it stalled out like it's been doing. can this mean that it's just a problem with the laser? Do they have head cleaners for computer DVD drives?

Sorry for my lack of knowledge
