CDMA vs TDMA

So, a friend of mine has ATT Wireless and i have Verizon. overall verizon does have better coverage than ATT in this are, however, he was telling me that TDMA is the superior technology and that CDMA seems to be reaching it's limits.

does anyone think that ATT will have better service than verizon any time soon?

As far as I know....ATT is based of the GSM network.

AT&T supports GSM phones, but isn't based on GSM.

no??

gsm is not cdma

just like pcs is not tdma

tdma was the first cellular technology to be introduced in the states,

tdma providers (att , cingular) upgrade (are in the process) to GSM to provide data services like GPRS and eventaully want to move to UMTS for 3G

pcs is cdma, verizon, sprint, nextel , use CDMA

CDMA already provide data services through 2.5 G CDMA and soon verizon is coming with something called EVDO (was announced at CEBIT) which will give data speeds upt to 600-700 kbps

overall CDMA will give you better services and at the same time give you the option to use services like pcs vision if you wanted

GSM is a good technology too but its still developing, coverage might not be the best across the country

TDMA is old technology, so avoid it as it is

ATT offers service on both GSM and TDMA. In my experience here in San Jose, CA, their GSM coverage is terrible. What's the point of having a phone with all the whiz-bang "mMode" features, when you can't even talk on the damn thing? I had to change back to TDMA.

that will be cool, the EVDO thing anyway.

i'm commited to verizon to be honest. i probably couldn't change if i wanted to, not for a while anyway.

i know

i am stuck with tdma myself, should have gotten verzon or sprint to begin with

i dont see using too much data services

but it would be cool to be able to connect my pda or laptop with blue tooth to the internet through my phone

CDMA - code division multiplexing (multiple access)
TDMA - time division multiplexing
GSM - Global System for Mobile (GSM is a TDMA digital system)
PCS is like gsm but i'm not sure which it uses (cdma or tdma)
gsm using cdma is likely to be the standard that takes over

Sprint Plans to skip EVDO and go straight to EVDV which will be faster and have voice and data and not just data.

and ofcourse UMTS (universal mobile telecommunication system) also called WCDMA - wide band CDMA or loosely 3G

i don't know, but my friend was telling me that pcs was based on cdma.

because we also discussed why sprint and verizon couldn't share phones, and that S Korea is mostly cdma (pcs).

hmmm I thought PCS meant that the frequency spectrum is 1900MHZ. Verizon supports 800MHZ wich is analog and out of the PCS spectrum. Just typing things on top of my head. Correct me if I'm wrong

Can I use a Sprint phone with Verizon if Verizon used CDMA? A lot of phones are only available for specific carriers and there's a lot of phone that I like but they're not provided by my carrier of choice. Since the phone my Sprint phone is CDMA I would think any carrier that uses CDMA should work with the phone. Or is the phone programmed for only Sprint?

i have heard of people unlocking sprint phones to work with verizon. but there are a few variables. first, verizon has to have the phone in their system. also, features such as text messaging and updating the PRL (preferred roaming list) wont work properly. from reading at HoFo, some people are able to get text messages on their phones, but cant reply to them. i cant go into specifics because i dont know exactly how it works, but im just passing along information ive seen in cell phone forums.

PCS is just "personal communication services" and doesn't describe any particular underlying technology.
sprint PCS is all CDMA, so that is where any confusion sets in
