Let me guess.
Obamacare has some hidden mandate.

Nanny state to the rescue.

We can only hope.

Do whatever you want in your own home, but keep that shit out of my face.

The number of states with comprehensive indoor smoking bans went from zero in 2000 to 26 in 2010.

so their big "math" here is...
Well it took 10 years to get a little over half to ban,
Therefor we predict another ten years (or so) for the next half.

Banning it in public places is A-OK.
Privately owned restaurants and bars? Stupid.
Then again I would have no problem with a COMPLETE ban on it (or taxing the hell out of it even more)

Being able to spray your drug of choice into enclosed spaces with strangers was always stupid anyway.

Good.. I cannot imagine myself going to a pub/restaurant where people are allowed to smoke, but thanks to smoking ban in IL.. I am really happy that I can spend some quality time with my buddies.. instead of choking on 2nd hand smoke.

But it should be up to the bar/restaurant owner to decide if they want smoking or not. Then it would be YOUR choice if you want to visit that establishment. That's the trick.

Yeah...because that worked so well before the ban.

No ban=smokers everywhere

This for sure. But I admit it's nice to shoot pool and not smell like an ashtray when we leave.

What? It worked fine.
A restaurant/bar could still ban smoking if they chose to. And, in my case, those were the places I went.

I like that EVERY restaurant and bar bans it now (by law) as that widely opens the places I am willing to go... but I don't think it's a fair law.

Yeap.
I always hated going to small venue concerts and the like (as they were in a bar and FILLLLLLLLLLLLLED with smoke). Now I come home and don't have to burn my clothes and shower before bed.

I wonder what comes next after this. Lose your license/pay more for liability if you consume alcohol regularly even without a single dui/incident? Lose some rights if you're too fat and take up more resources? All of this sets a dangerous precedent.

I can't recall ANY restaurant banning smoking before the law was in place myself. Then again, it has been the law here since the early 1990s IIRC.

I think in FL right now it's still optional, because there are bars I've been to that allow smoking, while some don't. I can't stand going to a place that allows smoking indoors. I come home smelling like ash and can't breathe for shit. I don't need lung cancer, thanks.

I didn't say they personally banned it before the law.
But I am saying that it's more in the shop owners' right to allow it or not than within my rights to a "smoke free environment" in a place that I personally choose to go to. If the place is too smokey, then that owner just lost my business. If they ban smoking or are able to keep it contained, then I may spend my money there.

trust me though Jules, if I had to vote on it, I'd keep the ban :) I like having unlimited choices :)

I'll take my chances.

Bar ownership is a very tough business and most of them are too scared to rock the boat with any changes that could lose any customers.

I remember after I moved to California and lived here for a few years going to Las Vegas for a weekend and how disgusting the casinos and restaurants there smelled. The smell of stale smoke was everywhere. It was REALLY noticeable and as a non-smoker living in a relatively smoke free environment for a few years it was nice to come home and not have to deal with it anywhere.

I'm all for these smoking bans.

All the hole in the wall bars near me closed shop. This in turn killed other stores next to these bars because no one ever goes near there now. My favorite hole in the wall diner closed as well as this little cafe. Deli owners raised prices to compensate for less foot traffic and it seems stores open and shop/change owners regularly. The only places left are big/corporate sports bars. A lot of property were also sold to franchises like subways and banks. People don't think and realize this kind of shit is ruining small business.

The basis of it is keeping smoke out of the air of non-smokers have to breath. People that drink or eat too much aren't forcing others around them to do it too. 404 no dangerous precedent found. It's pretty damn rude to smoke around people that don't want anything to do with it. That they have to make a law because it's so prevalent is what's really sad.

Like I said, I'm all for the bans too. (But I think they are fundamentally wrong)

How didnt it work? If you dont like the smoke, find a bar that bans smoking. There were several bars that banned smoking before the state banned it. They were packed.

I'm with you. Will this mean people will simply goto their cars and smoke every couple hours?

At my office, the smokers all just step right outside the door and fire up without considering other people going in and out.
