CD Writer recommendations....

Well my new Liteon 52x drive came yesterday, removed said trusty Philips and put in the Liteon. I've gotta say that I'm impressed - using even the generic crap media I use the drive was able to write at full speed, finishing a full 700Mb disc in less than 3 minutes. I don't think the drive is too noisy, its certainly no noisier than the 3x80mm fans I have in my case, though I do agree that the tray opens and closes very slowly.

My only gripe is the beige casing - it looks terrible against my Alu Lian Li. I would spray the facia though chances are the drive would die a week later and bang goes my warranty so I'll leave off the spraying until the drive has proven itself.

One question: The drive was manufacturered in August...do I need to upgrade the firmware??? (I don't even know what firmware is on it atm).

That was something that surprised me, my old creative 12-10-10 cdrw burned a full disk in 3.5 minutes. My new
lg 52-24-52 takes slightly over 3 minutes - very little gain?

With the lg I updated the firmware the day I got it and it did make a difference. Was easy to do, like flashing bios.

I've been using my 24x Liteon for 2.5 years now and not a bad burn either. It is a bit loud when it spins up to full speed, but it was a great buy.

I am resisting the urge to upgrade to a 52x Liteon

You can get drive face covers that match with your Lian Li.

Go here and make sure you match your drive's model no. to the correct firmware. Cheers!

3x80 mm fans are pretty noisy.

I have no quarrel with those who recommend Plextor. They are very good drives, but they do not outperform Liteons. My year old 40x Liteon cdrw has performed flawlessly for hundreds of burns. Also, some Plextors may be rebadged Liteons. About 2 years ago, Maximum PC magazine tested a Liteon and a same speed Plextor. They found them to be identical units and performed the same. The recommendation was to go for the Liteon unless you wanted to spend more money for the Plextor. The Plextor does come with better documentation and better support hours though.
