A couple of years ago I needed to get a good back up system, I decided on a SPARQ drive for cost, storage capacity and speed or backup. Unfortunately SPARQ went out of business and now my drive doesn't work. So I'm back to needing a back-up system. I've used tape back-ups in the past and they are not really convenient.

I'm thinking of going with a CD-RW system since DVD-RWs don't seem to be available. But I don't want to run into another disaster like I did with SPARQ. Any suggestions as to a brand or type of drive and media I should use.

I actually agree with Paulson on something! :Q

I would have to recommend Plextor. They are definitely the best. I have the 12/4/32 SCSI unit and it's great. :)

Another vote for plextor. You didn't specify SCSI or IDE but I assume IDE. For about $163 shipped after a coupon, you can get the Plextor 8x4x32 from buy.com. The Plextor 12x10x32 with Burnproof technology would be about $235 after coupon from buy.com. While Plextor is considered the best, Yamaha burners are good too. They are a bit cheaper than Plextors.

I agree with Paulson (yes!) about Nero too. CDR Win is pretty good I think too.

I don't think brand and quality of cds matters very much anymore. The biggest difference is probably the longetivity of the cds. A expensive brand may last 100yrs instead of 50yrs. I have been using Imation's with no problems at all. I got a 50pk of Kingston cds but have only burned a couple. The Kingstons were very cheap at $15 for 50 cds so I am not sure about quality.
