CD-RW, shutdown problem

i juz built my new system but there is a prob......
when i bootup with my cd-rw(creative blaster 32 x 12 x 40) the whole system juz seems to slow down alot
my friend told me tat it could be incompatibility with my system cos it works fine with my old system

new com specs:
Athlon XP 1800+
MSI-Ultra2
1x 256MB 333 PC2700 DDR Kingston Ram
Win2K Pro
Elsa Gladiac GeForce 2 MX 400
2x 40GB Maxtor 7200 HD


old com specs:
Pentium 3 800Mhz
DFI MB
1x 256 SDRAM PC133 kingston
2x 128 SDRAM PC133 kingston
Win2K Pro
2x 40GB Maxtor 7200 HD

(ps. also whenever i shutdown my new com, it shows the 'your com is safe to shut down' sign. it doesn't power off on it's own)

How do you have the CD-Rom configured?
Master? Slave? Cable Select?

The shutdown problem is due to the fact the PC is probably using the Standard PC HAL.

You can try enabling the NT Apm/Legacy Interface Node.

Goto:
CONTROL PANEL\SYSTEM\DEVICE MANAGER\View
Show hidden devices

Under NT Apm/Legacy Interface Node
click enable
 
I have similar problem when i shut down my computer. I checked device manager and i can't find view or NT apm.

I found intel power management controller if this is the same, but can't see legacy interface note.

I have win98, pentium 3, 550.

Is there another way to make it shut down regular way?

LiLithTecH did bring up a good point. Is your CDRW configured as a master? Usually, CDRW would prefer to have their jumpers set on the master, because they just do. Do you have the latest firmware for it (not sure if that matters). Is there any other additional information you can give us?

Do you get the "It is now safe to shutdown" Screen?
If you do, Boot in SAFE MODE and try powering down.

If it fails to power down in SAFE MODE, than more than likely your BIOS is the problem.
You would need to see if there is a more recent version available for your motherboard.

NT APM is only under Windows NT/2000/XP.

I was building a new system, so to excuse myself for some delay.

Yes, i get "It's safe now to shut down your computer" screen.
I tried to turn it off in Safe Mode, still it goes to that screen.

It started when i reinstalled windows. It worked fine before.
I'll try to update BIOS and see if it helps.

wat is standard PC HAL???

i followed ur instructions but couldn't c any NT Apm/Legacy Interface Node
it only showed "non plug n play drivers

i looked for it every where but it's not there..


all my previous rigs are

primary IDE master n slave - my 2 HD
secondary IDE master - cd-rom
secondary IDE slave - cd-rw

does tat make a diff?


i do have the "it is safe to shut down your computer now" screen
i did as u told but still happens...
maybe i'll try flashing my bios 2 a new version
